I haven't really kept up with what pedal steel, that are presently being made, are good these days and I am considering purchasing a new double neck this year.
If you were going to buy a new guitar, all things considered, what choice would you make? The ones I have looked at run about 5K, so assuming that general vicinity and in terms of tone, mechanics and just overall quality what would you buy?

Williams, with the ramps at the changer fingers is worth a look.
If you want snazzy engineering, the Japanese Excel is kinda snazzy.
Mullen, Ritt, Fessenden, Justice. All marvelous. The BenRom is gorgeous, but I don't know how many he makes.

Although not a modern choice with a myriad of knee levers and split tuning... Todd Clinesmith is keeping a legend alive. You won't find better craftsmanship or attention to detail. It's a great time in history to choose a new guitar, we are blessed with so many great builders today. My choice, without a doubt...Clinesmith.

Fulawka, Williams, perhaps a Mullen G2 if I could get a lacquer S10.. Also VERY intrigued by the gorgeous wood/lacquer steels being built by Kevin Hatton, and Bent Rommes.. Any of those 4 brands would make me a happy pedal steel guy...bob

Sticking said neck out here to an old friend. Cool

I was on/off D-10 shopping, now off. If I were "on" again, right now Gary, my concern has been with builders that say, "no, I can't do that", whereas IMO, pedal steel was born from "outside the box" thinking. I'm sure if I asked a builder to duplicate my old 3 floor/9 knee setup they'd laugh/turn me away. (Not that I'd want to use that setup again Shocked ) Thing is concerning new guitars, you may have a standard setup & that's all you're needing, great, no problem there. Still, if it were me, I'd go with someone who'd be willing to try to accommodate "wild hair/out of box" thinking.
That said, my 2 cents:
Mullen
Show Pro
GFI
Williams
Russler (not sure if they're still in business)
(no particular order of preference)
To the best of my knowledge, the above builders are still building, &/or none of the above have ever said, "no, I can't do that" to me, FWIW.

Hope all is well with you & yours. Wink

Is Russler still in business? The one in Nebraska. Their site was up within the past 2 weeks or so but now they've let the domain expire.

Played the road professionally, Worked with Duane, builds as good a guitar as can be produced, and provides great customer service. He also very much appreciates his customers.

There are others of course, but that's what I know first hand about Show Pro.

I know Jerry Fessenden is open to "other than standard" modifications and he makes a good guitar.

BTW Rex do you remember me? I took lessons from you at Arthurs Music in Indy. Good to hear you are still pickin'

Hadn't really talked to Jerry, but I hadn't witnessed him refusing requests that might be outside the box but IMO not unreasonable, here on SGF, anyway. So yeah, Fessenden should be on my short list. So should Desert Rose as I did ask Chuck about a loaded gtr. & seemed like he'd come thru fine.

On that Emmons I had as well as that last MSA MANY moons ago, I had E9 knee levers that were used only as "Boss Tone" levers to get me in the cello & viola range as well as the ol' 1st & 4th strs. with the C pedal down. In a way, to me, it's sort of silly to see those trying to "standardize" steel gtr. when it's historically been anything but that. Keeping the sour grapes to a minimum, even for just chords or licks, I've been met with "Why'd you want to do that?" or just "no". Leaving all that there.

Jumping off the thread a little, how's this for remembering you….

Columbus, maybe '75-'76, Grandpa Jones with us as the warmup (Wright Bros. Overland Stage Co. for those that don't know who "us" was). "Warmup", got to be kidding. It was COLD AS ALL GET OUT. I remember someone took a picture that made the paper of Tim & I looking like we're laughing at something funny while picking. Well, what was "funny" was our fingers seizing up from the cold trying to play scalded dog fast bluegrass tunes normally played at room temperature. Laughing You were there enjoying it (& encouraging us) though you were sharing the fact that it was a tad cold to be out playing anything, let alone bluegrass speed tunes. Shocked

Anyway, best to you in your search. Glad to hear you're staying with it as well. Wink
