How much difference would there be in string tension between a 24" scale and a 23" scale.
I'm wondering if I could get away with putting slightly heavier strings on my old Shobud 23" scale Crossover. Would that inch make a "regular" E9 set just a tad loose? The guitar has pretty poor sustain and I wonder if a bit of added string tension might help that.
Thoughts? _________________ RICK ABBOTT

I don't know about on normal guitar but on bass not only going up in gauge but also using strings with hex cores help. |

I'm investigating every aspect of how to increase the sustain on this guitar. Thanks for the thought! _________________ RICK ABBOTT

I already use a .012 on the 3rd string, it sounds good and feels right.
Any other thoughts about the difference in string tension 23 versus 24 inch scale? _________________ RICK ABBOTT

Using 'Arto's String Calculator' site tells me that a .012" string (for the 3rd string) on a 23" scale is at 34 lbs tension, which is more than tight enough |

Thanks, Richard.
The .012 was an experiment in better balance. That's what made me wonder if the whole guitar is low in tension.
I'll go check out that site. Again thanks! _________________ RICK ABBOTT

Well, this subject made it back to the front burner (or into the active loop in my brain) after a while exploring non-pedal fun.
What does anyone think about the original post: the question of a 23" scale steel being better off with heavier strings? _________________ RICK ABBOTT

I doubt if you will ever get an equal amount of sustain from a 23" scale length as from a 24" scale.
In my mind's eye, the longer the scale, the longer the sustain. |

I don't expect "equal" I guess, just wondering if anyone has direct experience with gaining sustain from heavier strings.
Before I buy a bunch of strings to try it I thought I might see what has been learned. _________________ RICK ABBOTT
