MAYBE I AM CRAZY, BUT I HAVE BEEN WONDERING IF ANY PLAYERS HAVE OR HEARD OF A UN1 10 COPEDANT THAT USES THE 9TH STRING "D" INSTEAD OF ELIMINATING IT? I HAVE A GFI ULTRA 12..LOVE IT.. BUT MISS THAT OPEN "D" WHEN IN E9TH MODE. I CAN GET THE "D" ON MY 10TH STRING "B" BY RAISING IT WITH A KNEE LEVER. BUT IS JUST NOT THE SAME!
ANY IDEAS? THANKS FOR READING!! _________________ left handed Excel Dl0, left handed GFI UNI 12 Ultra, 2 n.ville 400's, DD3,Lexcicon MPX100... |

You can have an open D string on any configuration.
Just put it on there.
Play it when you need to, and avoid it when you need to.
Change the other strings as you see fit, also.
Just my opinion, but every Steel guitar ever made is "Universal", no matter what the configuration. |

Tony, Jeff Newman's copendent for the 12 U is set up to give you the 9th string D. LKL on Mr. Jeff's is 2nd string and 9th string to D. Giving you a B6th tuning. I have it set up on a GFI Ultra 12. But with helping a hurt friend have not been able to get serious on it. It is shown on the tuning section of his DVD lesson. If you need it let me know and I will take a picture of my tuning chart and Post it or send it to you in a Personal E-Mail. Good Luck and Happy Steelin. |

I have my own version of a 10 string Universal. Don't get me wrong as I love my U-12 but playing in a band strings 11 & 12 get lost with the bass player.
My setup is 5 pedals and 6 knee levers. The same basic Newman setup minus strings 11 & 12, the boo-wha pedal and C pedal. I have a vertical that raises string 4 E to F#.
The guitar is very light not much of a learning curve. I hope to do a video soon. |

Yes, that 10 string universal tuning was developed by Jan Visser. Most likely, the U12 tuning that Jeff Newman used, is derived from the U12 tuning that Jan Visser developed in the 70's and was shown to Jeff in 1977. When Emmons didn't make a 12 string guitar anymore, he developed his 10 string tuning. _________________ ----------------------------------

Pete, I agree with you on that. If you can think it up they I can build is what Mitsuo Fuji from Excel told me. I am a lefty.. so both of my steels are lefty... I have an Excel D10 & a GFI ULTRA 12 with the Newman set up except for my LKL drops my 4 & 8. I changed it from LKR because I find it easier to hold when in B6th. And makes it more comfortable to access my pedals..My pedals are Emmons set up. I believe Jeff preferred the Jimmy Day set up. When I first met Jeff back in 76 he showed me a cool single note run using 9th string D on the E9th neck. This was was before I got into the UNI!2. I can't duplicate the lick on my UNI...is one reason why I was curious about a 10 string uni copedant with a 9th string D. It's nice to go from one tuning to the other on the fly with my uni 12... but not like the lower strings for playing with my band. They do get lost in sauce.. lol... so I will hit the drawing board and kick it around some more. Thank you all for you responses! Any more ideas/ suggestions are welcome. The problem with being a left handed steel player is I cannot sit with steels to try them properly. So to try one I have to have one built. Like my GFI ultra 12. It's a great guitar. Gene & Bob are the best too. _________________ left handed Excel Dl0, left handed GFI UNI 12 Ultra, 2 n.ville 400's, DD3,Lexcicon MPX100... |

here's mine...
it is a little awkward using the E to D, I find, but I'm digging it overall. got it to play rhythm in rock bands, basically.
