I did this one years ago but discovered a bunch of mistakes. I had to find the music to figure out the timing. Tough one!

Nice job, Andy. I agree with Mark, this is a great song for steel guitar.

I worked out a B11 arrangement of Nuages about six years ago

i always 'heard' this song in my head on B11, which is a close relative to A6.
Eddie Rivers did a version at one of the AATW shows i was at and i asked him about it - he said A6.

Thanks, guys. I fixed a typo in the PDF. The first 2 notes should have been b & c. The audio doesn't reflect this fix.

It works nicely in B11th, Doug! Those 9th chords sit perfectly in the straight bar position in that tuning. Mike Fried did a nice version in B11th too: http://www.hsga.org/MikeFried.htm

Nuages is one of those tunes that can go in a lot of different directions from the simple to the complex. I tried to control my tendency to add too much and keep it fairly straightforward. In reality, I would add more idiomatic steel flourishes and some spicier harmonies. Manoir De Mes Reves (Django's Castle) works well in A6th too in the key of D. The arrangement I did years ago was really lame when I played it so that one needs a facelift too.

those are some wonderful tracks by Mike Fried - what happened to him and his project? thats exactly what i was hearing (B11) in his version of Nuages. i remember his name from the 'old' forum but haven't seen him on here in several years.
nice to hear some F#9 on his other cuts

I met him at Bobbe Seymour's when I was in Nashville for a shoot - must be about 18 years ago. Really nice guy. I had no idea at the time how well he played. His version of South of Honolulu is very beautiful.

Thanks for bringing up this tune, Andy. It is essential repertoire, IMO.

I play it in C6/A7, and transpose it to the key of F#.

Mind if I post a link?

I like all of the versions above, different tunings, different interpretations.

Roy, I like that fill you played at 1:02. Is that played with pull-offs?

I always loved this song and you you all did great renditions. This thread will be a good source for inspiration when I find time to work out an arrangement.

I always thought Jules Ah See's / JB's Intro/Outro arrangement of Sand was inspired by Nuages, so B11 will be my choice.

I thought the same thing and I wrote and asked Byrd that question back in the early 90s. He said he was familiar with a lot of what Django did but didn't know Nuages but he doubted there could possibly be any connection. Nuages was written during WWWII. When did Iona write Sand?

I'm working on a B11th version now. Amazing what changing one string 1/2 step does.

Here's my 2nd attempt in B11th. I tried to get some of the flavor of the way Django mixed stately beauty with single note flourishes.

Hello all, thanks so much for the kind words! I had been pretty much off the Forum for quite quite some time but have poked my head back in again over the last few days. I'm afraid my lap steel chops have been neglected for a few years but my passion for it is likely to resurface at some point! BTW, if anyone's interested in a copy of the "South of Honolulu" CD, send me a PM - many copies left! Aloha!
