Topic: Any tips for music with pedal steel in it? |

Hello everybody!
Tomorrow I'm a guest on a national TV-show for kids (ages 5- and I'm being interviewed as a Pedal Steel Guitar player. I will talk about the instrument and it's origin but I also want to give some examples of music with alot of pedal steel in it. I also would like name some artists that are fairly "non Country" such as John Mayer (Paul Franklin plays on his latest album) and others that the kids might already know and just didn't know that there were pedal steel on the albums.
I doubt the kids over here in Sweden know who Ray Price is!
Does anyone have examples of "todays music" with pedal steel in it?

I've heard that James Hetfield (Metallica) plays PSG. But I doubt that the little children know them.

i teach kids 5 and up. they won't know who john mayer is, even.
i've demo'd the pedal steel to my students, and they get the hawaian/sponge bob connection (no pedals in sponge bob, though). they know about country music as a genre, so i just say it's an instrument that's found in country music (mostly).
i always make a point to tell kids that there is lots and lots of music out there that they've never heard, and it's not on the radio. if we didn't tell them, how would they know?
my suggestion is to talk about what you really love about pedal steel and show them. kids are better at making connections based on emotion than on historical context! |

Don't forget about Dire Straits. They used Paul Franklin on tour and a lot of recordings. Some of the most amazing stuff and, it's heard "everywhere"!!! Good Luck.

The #1 record in Sweeden has pedal steel all over it. Every song and it's out front in the mix.

Thanks Everybody for your input! I don't watch cartoons so I didn't know that the Sponge Bob theme was on Steel guitar!
The interview went great! I played some stuff all solo and some with their band.

You could tell them Sponge Bob Square pants has a lot of steel in the show as I think I've heard it is shown in Sweden.
Then you could talk about how steel players are stuck somewhere behind all the guitar players and that we don't get chicks like lead singers.
Maybe finish up with a discussion on JI vs Equal temperament tuning.
I'm just trying to help out a little.
