It is time to order new strings and I have a question.
For the last fifteen years I've been using Buddy Emmons SITs. I've read a lot of people talking about Cobra Coil strings. So my question is how do they compare to each other and is there really any big difference between SIT and Cobra Coils?

How's that for reccomendations. I still use the Live Steel Strings. I like the Stainless on my Mullen.

I have been very happy with SIT strings. They're very consistent, and they last a long time. Good tone. And,,,, they have had no problem supplying me with my special strings for my Baritone guitar.

The forum sells both brands and most any other you've ever heard of. You get a great product and the forum receives needed revenue to continue commercial free operation.

Hi John...I switchd from SIT to Cobras and used them for 15 years..they sound great on my ShoBuds and Excels, they last longer than the SITs...I switched to Live Steel SS 2 years ago and they are brighter than the Cobras... Larry

I used Cobra Coils for a long time and never broke a string,I also tried GHS Boomers and they too are great,I bought four sets of "Live" and the third broke on every set after a relatively short time.I recently installed a set of GHS Americana which I purchased from B0B at this forum and the tone is definitely the best I have heard,I still have to see how long they will last.

I may have mentioned before, but I`ve found the very best strings that I`ve been using are Jag-Wires.
They sound just `fantastic`and the longest lasting strings that I`ve ever used.
I also use them on my 5 string too with the Scruggs Tuners and they sound just great.
I must say, I have no options what to replace anymore.

Billy...I too broke several Live Steel .012 on the 3rd string, just putting them on...I just got some .011s, (I have used .012s for years for a fatter G#,) and will see if I can get the balance with the Telonics PU...the Cobra .012s never broke!..Larry

I tried Cobra Coils for a short while, but I couldn't get a 3rd string to last more than two gigs on my Dekley. I even broke 5th and 10th strings, which almost never happen with other brands.
Either I got a bad batch or some strings work better with different guitars. Maybe the chromed steel changer fingers didn't like the material Cobra Coils are made of. |

| I had been using JagWire stainless strings for quite a while and liked the way they responded and sounded. I started using Live Steel Strings about a year ago and I love them. I had a post recently about their duration. I'm not endorsing using strings for the length of time that, I did, but, they have lasted for over a year and for over 70+ gigs. They weren't getting dull after a few months, so, I decided to run a test and so far they're holding up. I'll be changing them soon though because there's a whole new itinerary of gigs coming up and I don't want to press my luck too far. Sid sells a great product! |

Allow me to address the subject of breaking a 12 gauge string.
For 40 years Buddy Emmons got that beautiful tone we all remember and he did it with a 10 gauge string.
Then somewhere along the line people started experimenting with an 11 gauge string and it became industry standard so to speak.
Now people are starting to experiment with a twelve gauge string for the G# (third string).
Should we bypass the 12 gauge and just move on to the 13 gauge?
Certainly not.
Why… you wouldn’t get it to an F note before it would break. If it did break it might cut you finger off just above the knuckle.
A 12 gauge string for the (third string) is right on the line of being too big. (Too much tensile strength)
Can you get one on the guitar? Sure!
You might get it on the 1st try or the 6th try. The moral of the story is be prepared to break some strings unless of course you are a pro player.
It’s just a simple fact, for an array of different reasons some players regularly break strings and most do not.
This is my opinion.
Different strokes for different folks. I personally do not like the 12 gauge for a 3rd string. Why?
A good player frequently uses the third string in combination with other strings. Just to name 3:
3 and 2
3 and 5
3,4 and 5
The tensile strength of a 12 gauge string (used for a 3rd string) is so taught that it feels out of balance when used in combination with other strings.
Ex: When using the 3rd string in combination with the 4th string, it makes the 4th string feel flappy. There is such a dramatic difference in tensile strength, it feels strange to me.
I believe that tensile strength should feel as even as possible when playing across the strings.
Having a string as rigid as a 12 gauge string that pulls to an A note surrounded by strings of significant less tensile strength is not of my taste.
But does it sound better?
My ear tells me that the 11 gauge 3rd string is louder than the 12 gauge 3rd string.
Sooooo… The 12 gauge 3rd string is not only very rigid to the touch, the small amount of volume loss irritates me.
To each there own but please don’t blame the string manufacturer when it is you that can’t get a string on a guitar.

I've stuck with the third string G sharp, 11ga. and haven't broke one yet. Been using Sid's strings since they first hit the market.

I used used Sit strings for a long time, But I broke my no.5- B string twice within Two months. Plus a couple of no.3's along the way. So I switched to Live Steel strings,also, BMI puts them on their new instruments. Great tone and longevity. Sid's the man to call. Tenn. Lee
