What are every one's thoughts on the Roland Cube 80? I would appreciate any input. I'd like to have a Walker rack set up but can't afford that puppy. Thanks Wes I see the 80GX has any one heard it? _________________ Justice S10 Jr, Gibson Electra 6string, Boss Katana 100, Steelers Choice ,Gretsch 6 string lap, Hilton VP |

I'm using a Carvin BX500 amp (8 lbs) and an Eminence EPS-15C speaker in a custom cabinet, 23 lbs for the speaker and cabinet. A lot easier to carry around. |

then one day a friend came over and played his steel
through my cube hey sounded decent so I keep it for backup and lite duty stuff for my steel
I like that carvin amp Jack spoke of as well
so yeah the cube is a good steel amp IMHO _________________ Mullen g2 d-10

Wesley,
I have been using a Roland 80XL for the last 3 years and have had very good results. I still use a rack mounted Peavey TransTube Fex for delay, reverb, and the tube like warmth of the preamp. When our band practices at the bass players house I use the on board effects rather than packing the rack. It has been a good weekend warrior setup.
We play small rooms for the most part and typical don't mic our instruments. For outside gigs mic'd the Cube has plenty of power, and a really nice sound from the 12" speaker.
If money was no object I would go for the Milkman Half and Half http://milkmansound.com/amplifiers/300w-half-and-half, or the Quilter Steelaire http://www.quilterlabs.com/index.php/products/steelaireseries hard to justify just playing every other weekend.
I am considering the Quilter Toneblock http://www.quilterlabs.com/index.php/products/toneblock-amplifiers/tone-block-200 and a 12" or 15" Telonics speaker. I like the idea of everything rack mounted for easy access.
Good luck on your search!!
Jack, I have looked at the Carvin amp please give us your thoughts compared to others you have played.

Jack, that Carvin BX 500 sounds interesting. I have a Telonic's 8 ohm speaker. Would there be any problem using it with the Carvin? I like the fact that it has an effects loop for my Wet Reverb and a Low Z direct out.
Can you please elaborate a little on the Carvin? How does it compare to other steel amps that you have had? Is it pretty easy to dial in a good tone? Will it play loud without breaking up? |

Russ I belong to Heartland SGA haven't been up there for a long time going to try to make it in March. I'm going to Lone Jack Thur. to play my rig thru an 80xl Clark has with an ext. speaker. Thank you I appreciate the offer. Wes _________________ Justice S10 Jr, Gibson Electra 6string, Boss Katana 100, Steelers Choice ,Gretsch 6 string lap, Hilton VP |

I've been using the Carvin BX500 for about a month. I've had 5 gigs with it, in my opinion, it's the best amp I've ever used. It has 2 speaker jacks, and it can go as low as 2 ohms, which means you could use 2, 4 ohm speakers without a problem. I've tried several speakers, both 12" and 15", I am now using a Sica !5" neo speaker. It has a very extensive eq system, including a graphic eq. It's super powerful, actually I doubt most steel players would ever need this much power, but it nice to have it it needed. It took a little while to figure out the best way to set it, but I'm really happy with it now. Some of you may know that I was not a fan of the Roland 80, the BX500 makes it look like a toy. I liked the GK MB200, but the Carvin has much more to offer. And it's a real bargain too. |

Bill, thanks for your response about the Carvin BX500 amp. I feel that the subject of this amp has gotten buried in a general post about amps, the Roland Cube in particular. I am going to start a new post about the BX 500. I am beginning to get interested in this amp. I had a Carvin PA system for several years that I liked and it never had any problems. |

In my retro country band, I love the vintage tones I get from my Fender Vibrasonic (the Bruce Zinky one from 1995), but my CUBE (60 watt) is more versatile, not to mention forty pounds less. It's my "grab 'n go" for when I need to keep the weight down, and/or there's just not as much room on stage or in a band van.
Plus, since I'm playing a Stringmaster, I can get more PSG-ish tones on the E13 neck with the JC channel, and more old-fashioned sounds on the C6 neck with the "tweed" channel. We just mic it up and run it through the PA, and it's plenty loud and punchy. No, not the visual vibe of the Fender, but nobody but musicians notice anyway.
On gigs where I do take my Fender, I bring it as a backup in case the Fender gives me any tube issues, etc.
Best $100 (bought used) I've spent on gear for a long time! |
