Topic: standardized scoring structure for Steel players |

Steel Guitar playing is all about subjectivity - We subjectively critique each steel player, compare and contrast each one in the Steel pickin' pool and rate each accordingly. Now, as a subjective, seems we should have some standardized scoring structure.
Presently, short of the Hall of Fame, rating is nothing more than shameless massaging. |

Why! "Why" is about "Theory" and that question just shouldn't be ask!
It would be nice though to have judges declare once and for all who's the best picker and what Steel Guitar has the best tone, end the Forum cold war and get back those long gone topics of years past that leave you with that warm fuzzy feeling! |

Whenever I've broached this subject, I've always gotten into the "Those guys play two different styles, so there's no way you can compare them" kind of argument.  Then, there's the idea that style is more important, or just as important, as raw talent. In the final analysis, I've more or less come to the conclusion there's no pleasant way to discuss it in public. Disagree with someone's "rating" or opinion, and you get personally attacked, or at the very least, ostracized behind your back.

I read somewhere that George Strait went to Nashville SEVEN times before he found anyone willing to sign him. George Jones once said in an interview "I can remember singing in front of 25 people and nobody clapped." The point is that for every ten people that like what you do, there may be one hundred that don't. If two hundred don't like what you do, don't get discouraged. There may be two thousand that do. All that anyone can do is their best.

| This is my opinion and both player and guitar are summed up thus; Buddy Emmons. Maybe not too objective but this brings out comparisons like Ford or Chevy, Eagles or Giants.......boxers or briefs? |

Mr. McDonald I have a "WhY" with your Obviously way above average language skills you come at me with E I E I O.
We could Maybe consider judges like the Olympics the highest score is taken out and the lowest score is taken out, leaving each steel player with the same number of remaining judges, and their scores are then added to make a total score.
The individual with the highest score (multiplying the degree of difficulty by the judges score with deductions for mishaps) is deemed the winner with the next lowest coming in second and so on and so forth. |

Yes, the scores would be more average, making it clear to all that none of us is any better.

Given the range of the instrument, I think that the C clef is the most practical for scoring the pedal steel. Good luck finding players willing to read it, though. I'm afraid we are stuck with the multi-page atrocity of the grand staff or worse (tablature) for this generation, perhaps for all time.
