Hey yall,
New member here! Just wanted to introduce myself to this fine bunch. I have played steel for about 5 years and spent most of that time on a Carter Starter. Recently I bought an MSA Vintage XL U12, which I promptly dismantled and converted into a 5-pedal E9. However I've been playing around with the B6 mode as a lap steel and I feel like I'm missing something without the B6 pedals. So my question is, what are the most-used pedals for B/C6 guitars? I will have 3 total for B6 as I plan on taking off the 5th E9 pedal which I just don't use very much(f#-g# raise on 1 and 7). I have literally no experience with B6 playing but am really interested in getting out of my E9 "box"
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks, Daniel |

You might enjoy checking out Zane King on you tube, covers those pedals quite well comparing how most C6 are set up. _________________ Die with Memories. Not Dreams.

On C6 the most used pedals are 5 and 6 as seen on a standard D10 copedant. Next would be 7. Lowering your sixth string a half step from B to B flat will give you a duplicate of the standard C6 knee lever. |

I use pedals 5,6 & 7 as the heart of my CC6th. Also the 5th string down a half step (on a KL) is useful in both the E9th and B6th tunings. |

I think Mike means lowering string 5, B to Bb. Just trying to clarify that. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Ok. I do have the B-Bb lower on my lkv. So it sounds like basically the first 3 of the regular 4 on universal guitars. Cool, I will try that out. ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

Thank you Richard for catching my goof.
For what it's worth I have the C6 7th pedal equivalent setup on my E9 neck(strings 5@6 up a whole step). It's a very nice change by itself and with the E levers. |

I wish you would have asked this question before dismantling your S12U.
fwiw, The Folks at MSA put alot of thought and R&D into the E9/B6 Universal tuning.
I would have advised you to not change anything for a while.
Any chance you could put it back to one of the more standard E9/B6 S12U setups?
Was yours orginally 8x5? |

Mike, I have seen others with that string 5 & 6 whole tone raises, but never could understand why. I can see it on the E9/B6 Universal. I have a zero pedal on my guitar that I haven't found a change that I would actually use. It just sits there, feeling neglected. Maybe I will try your change. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Hey Richard. The change gives F#7 in the open position. Maj7 with the F lever, a sixth with the Eb lower, plus nine with the b pedal and some other things. If you have the emmons set up you could of course split the change and just use the G# raise on the zero ped. Certainly more useful this way but I don't have the option. |

The other most-used C6 pedal would be P5 (on the old familiar setup). And the most-used change from that pedal is lowering middle G a half step. On E9 that corresponds to lowering middle F# a half step. For me that works well on a knee lever. I even use a half stop and lower it down to E. |

The reason for changing the setup was because my main interest is E9 recording,i.e. background fills and intros. I specifically wanted the Franklin pedal and the G#/E on strings 1 and 2, and it was easier finding a guitar with 7 pedals than 4. I would consider trying to find another pedal if you guys think it would be better to have the full 8X5 setup. I definitely think the guitar would be worth the money spent on improvements. _________________ Why suck at one instrument when you can suck at many? |
