Hey Cartwright... This reminds me of the Monty Python sketch where the guy is arrested for deliberately mistranslating a Hungarian/English phrase book...

I had my hands on a new Stringmaster a few years back when I was in Tokyo. As far as I could tell the only difference from the old ones was a slight orange peel in the finish. Not really noticeable. Probably a fine guitar, if a bit pricey.
I am still kicking myself for turning down one of these for $125 back in 1973. "what am I gonna do with the extra 2 strings..." Duh. _________________ Excel D10 8&4, Supro 8, Regal resonator, Peavey Powerslide, homemade lap 12(a work in progress) |

It says this a new Deluxe 8? A repro? |
Both these and doubleneck Stringmasters have been available from Fender Japan for a few years now and have appeared in their catalogues and Fender Japan's website. The deluxe 6 and deluxe 8 are there currently:
http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp/dlx8.html
I'm guessing that the Ebay listing is a direct google translation of that web page (which is why it starts by saying that parts aren't available separately)
This has prompted discussions on this board about why they can't (won't) sell replacement tuner pans and other parts since they have the tooling to produce them.
I'm sure they are great instruments, having owned and played other Japanese Fenders but can't understand why someone would pay as much or more than the cost of an original example for one of these re-issues. |

I did a currency conversion of the Yen listed in that catalog and it equals $1,516 US dollars.
Here's a thought... the population of Japan is 40% of the population of the USA, yet Fender finds it profitable to build and sell its steels there. Either the steel guitar is more popular in Japan than it is here or the production costs are a lot lower there, or maybe both.
50 years from now buyers, sellers, and collectors will be trying to figure out which Deluxe 8s are from the 1950s/60s and which are later Japanese ones. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

I'm sure you're right. While I don't read Japanese, I can read the Kanji therein, which are consistent with your guess. |

fender probably doesn't offer these in the US because you can fairly easily buy a nice vintage stringmaster for less than $1500. i would guess that most steel players are into retro music anyway and favor the 'authentic' instrument over new.
i'm not one of the "vintage is always better' club, but i would think along these lines...
nice that Fender Japan is offering them at least. _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |

"We appeal to exist."
It's basswood. That should be a defining fact 50 years from now. I am assuming Fender didn't make basswood ones in the American version. _________________ RICK ABBOTT
