I recently played through a friend's 1983 Fender Deluxe Reverb II. I expected a dirty tone, but it really was fantastic . I think I can see why there are so many tube amp fanatics out there. At bedroom volumes, it had a wonderfully complex clean. If I dig in, it really didn't distort as much as bloom. I found that I loved the reverb in the amp too. In fact, the only thing that I missed was the low end of my Nashville 112. (I usually have it cranked.)
So my question for the steelers out there is this. Do you get that same kind of complex clean at louder volumes with an old twin? Should I look for a twin with a 15" (or vibrosonic) to get the low end that I'm used to?
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. _________________ '02 Carter S-12 uni

Not knowing your budget, I would tell you to check out the Milkman amplifiers at www.milkmansound.com
I have the Pedal Steel Mini 40w with a 1x12 Telonics NEO speaker and it has tons of low end, as well as that sweet bloom you heard with the Deluxe. For more clean headroom, there is an 85w version of that amp, or you can try the "Half and Half" 300w hybrid amp that uses a solid state power section with a tube preamp and reverb section. Oh, and they weigh about half as much as a similarly powered Fender.
Best,

I am a Milkman guy too. Only I do not like 15" speakers.
Find a stock 70's silverface twin with 2 12"s. I would avoid the reissue twins if at all possible. See if that does the trick.
Lots of great old tube amps out there. Musicman, Traynor, Ampeg... They are not too expensive. _________________ Bob |

Yes I'd love to purchase a milkman amp. Whew - it sounds great, but my budget is quite a bit tighter than that. I'm gonna have to sell off a guitar and an amp to afford something in the $800 range. I'm keeping a look out for a silver face twin.
I saw a 1970 twin at my local guitar center with JBLs but it was awful. Both speakers obviously blown and hummed very loudly when the reverb was activated. I don't know much about these amps but $900 seemed very high for an amp with that much work left to restore it. _________________ '02 Carter S-12 uni

If you liked the tone of a Deluxe Reverb, you'll love a Twin. |

With 85 watts and the two 12's pushing sound out of the front and back of the cabinet, you get that glorious 3D Twin Reverb sound. A 15 is nice but the 2 x 12 pushes more air and has a wider dispersion. The bass will thump you right in the chest. |
