| I'm curious about the sunburst laquer finish on an Emmons Legrand. Anyone have a picture they would share? I asked Emmons Guitar for a sample and they don't have one. I'd love to see one. |

My old push-pull loafer is sunburst lacquer. Unfortunately the guitar is loaned out right now and I don't know when it's coming back, so I can't get you a picture. But I know that the cabinet is "bird's-eye" maple and the finish is basically a transparent reddish orange shaded with gloss black, a simple two-tone sunburst. It should be able to be duplicated easily enough by a luthier because I've seen a number of two-tone sunburst 6-string guitars in the same color.
I remember seeing a picture of a late-1960's Emmons double neck that was a yellow orange sunburst with less black shading than mine has. Assuming that it was a factory finish, I think that I might like that color better than mine. Maybe there isn't really a "standard" sunburst finish on Emmons guitars, or maybe the one in the picture could be a custom finish.

Wow! That is a gorgeous guitar! I've got to have one. The sunburst looks like the style used on Gibson big box guitars.

Not sure if it's still there, but until a year ago there was a well used sunburst D10 Push Pull at the Guitar Center in Clear Lake (Webster). I wouldn't pay more than $1,000 for it because it looked like it would need another $1,500 put into it - which at the time I didn't have. I once had them talked down to $1,200 but they wouldn't go any further. It was there for a couple of years, so I guess it may still be there. Would be a good buy for somebody who can do the work themselves.

| Hey everyone I really appreciate the nice pictures, some by email and some here. I think most of the sunburst models were push-pulls and I still don't know what the current Legrands look like with this finish. I have a Gibson Console Grande with sunburst and it's beautiful. One day I want an Emmons with the same finish. Dream on. I also have an Emmons Legrande II in rosewood. |

I don't think Emmons ever did a Gibson-style finish as shown on Mike W.'s guitar. I believe that was a recent refinish, though if Emmons ever offered that, I bet they'd sell a whole lot of them. I've seen a Fessenden with a Gibson-style 'burst finish and it's a gorgeous guitar.
Not as striking, but cool nontheless, would be an early Strat two-tone 'burst. And for the bizarre amongst us... and I count myself in that group... an Emmons with a 1966 Fender 2000 black-red-yellow sunburst would also be attractive.

| Herb is correct. My guitar was completely restored by Bobbe Seymour. It had an original Emmons Sunburst but I chose the Gibson style sunburst for the front and left the top natural. I have always been pleased with my choice and would do it again simply because it is pleasing to my eyes. Thank you Donny for posting the picture as I am proud of this trophy. For the record, it's a 70 model fatback with 705's on both necks and it honks and growls! Everything is original except the tuners (Kluson knockoffs in gold) and the finish. |
