I just ordered and an awaiting a copy of A.R. Duchossoir"s book on Gibson lap steels, but in the meantime I have pressing issue on serial numbers for the late 30's Gibson EH150's.
I am looking at one that the owner states has no serial number either behind the headstock or on or near the neck joint. He states he cannot see one. Does anyone know if Gibson had a run of these with no serial numbers whatsoever?
Here are some pics.

The serial # on mine is on the bottom cover, where it meets the neck. Haven't been able to figure out just what year it is. ...501-24 is what's stamped in it.
It has the Christian pickup like yours, except that it's a 7 instead of a 6 string...

Bill, as I remember, yours is probably a 1936-7. In 1938 the first letter would be D, E was used in '39 and again in '41 with a different configuration, F is 1940. The Duchossoir book contains the details.
Sometimes the stamping is very faint, but it always seems to be there.

Thanks John ! That gets it within a year or so Very Happy
I didn't realize that these were a hollow body until a friend gave me this one, which was falling apart ! A lot of little pieces were used to build it, which is unusual in view of all the solid bodies out there..
Maybe that's a carry-over from Gibson's acoustic tech ?
The one in the pictures appears to be in nice condition.
