The Palomino Riders indeed; I would like to have heard The Shutouts. Incredible.
And he liked 'It's A Wonderful Life.' A man I'd like to have known. |

So sorry to hear about Greg's passing. We all knew him out here, and always enjoyed the time we got to spend together, both working and hanging.
He's already been missed around these parts for a long time.

There's video - good live video of the Shutouts. I know because I was a camera operator for that shoot which was on some sound stage in Hollywood. It was in the early 80s as I recall. I was out on the end of a big crane and I got to shoot Sneaky from like 20 feet overhead and I had some nice swooping crane shots of his solos. Gregg called me in for that because of my video experience at Leon Russell's Paradise sound stage in Burbank and because I knew everybody involved. Gregg somehow charmed his way into Leon's inner circle and often used Leon's studio C over on Magnolia Blvd for his recording projects and I was around for a lot of those. On the Shutout thing we shot multiple takes of several songs with maybe 4 cameras and it seemed very well organized. I never did see the edited video though. It must be out there somewhere.
I played steel on a lotta gigs with Gregg in Dale Watson's band when Dale lived here in L.A. and before that in the Jim Leslie band in the Palomino days and I have a few bizarre stories I can't really share here.... But he was a hoot. Frequently stoned,frequently late,frequently needed to borrow an amp but he could always easily talk his way back into the offended party's good graces and somehow always pulled a rabbit out of his hat when he had to. A truly funny man,good musician,agent provocateur,sometime knucklehead and all round American original. Always drove a big white Cadillac. Like Skip said he's been living in Nashville for decades now but all the pickers here in L.A. will never forget Gregg Humphrey. I really hate to hear this news. |

Sad to hear this. I grew up with Greg, and after we graduated high school we played together in country-rock bands, until 1974 when Greg and I worked for Lloyd Hickey in Sacramento. When the band was offered the gig at the Palomino Club in LA, I decided not to move to southern CA, and started my career with the US Forest Service.
I didn't see much of Greg after he left Sacramento.. just a few trips he made back to Placerville.
I've got some great memories of the early bands we were in.. sad to know he is gone.

| Greg helped to mentor 4 of my kids(friends)that went to Nashville. He'd make them play open mic at Tootsies so that they would expand their knowledge and now they are all excellent at what they do. Every time I saw him he would ask "who are you sending me next" He took care of those kids and I mean all of them. He'll be missed. |

For any of you who are members and would like to leave your thoughts. The picture I mentioned is there as well... Greg had the heart of a giant and will surely be missed on Broadway

I did a quick search on The Shutouts and didn't find much. Did they ever have any recordings. Sounds like an interesting band.
