This IS concerning a mechanical design idea related to steel. Just concerning pickup placement. I've been experimenting w/ a 6str MIDI PUP on my 12str uni. After trying it in different positions I have come to the conclusion that I need design & build a movable PUP on a type of "rail" system,moving back & forth across the neck,w/ a "detent" for each position. That way you could easily move the PUP from the low "B6th" position to the upper "E9th" position or anywhere in between. I will post some line drawings of my idea ASAP. Meanwhile all you mechanical types do some brainstorming on this, please. Thanks!

Use two separate but identicle 6-string systems.
One for the top 6 strings, one for the bottom 6 strngs. |

That's the prob,my man! I don't want or HAVE 2 separate systems. The synth isn't used that much. I don't want to go thru the hassle of that. Hence, my idea. It's strictly an engineering problem. All I want is to design a movable pickup. No 2 PUPS involved.

Just thinkin our loud now... If an S12U player went over to Guitar Center and bought two identicle 6-string guitar Midi Systems, they'd be up and running with a 12 string Midi system pretty quickly.
Anyone tried it?
You've got 30 days to return it if it didn't work out. |

Pete: I have tried it (I borrowed a friends GR-1 synth & PUP) We MIDIed them together & it was awesome! BUT, I don't want to screw w/ 2 synth's. I think ya'll are missing the point here, all I want is a way to have the pickup move when & if I need it to. My ? is about a way to move the PUP in a quick, easy, predictable manner. It will help when I post my line drawings. Thank you for your input!

What Midi sounds do you need?
Have you considered something like this?
Mount the pickup to the sliding part.

Pete: That's exactly the kind of system I'm talking about,BUT I want it "detented" for all positions. I'll post my drawings soon. I may be able to use that sliding latch as a starting point. Thank you for a great idea. Good thinking!

I messed around with something similar several years back. One issue you are likely to have with a pickup which moves: To get the MIDI system to trigger correctly one needed to adjust the output level of each pole piece to the particular string being sensed. If you move the pickup to a different string that balance will be impacted.
