Topic: anyone ever hear of this odd change on a pedal steel?? |

Recently while doing a set up for a guy, He asked me to set his second string lower thusly..
Eb-D-C#,,, Pretty normal right?
However, he wanted the feel stop set off his 5 string B, thereby lowering it to Bb... He therby eliminated his V lever, that had been lowering his B's 1/2..
I took it off the guitar for him..
I thought it was an ugly change, just too close and dissonant, but he said he really likes it.. I always set the second string feel stop off the 9 string.
Anyone ever lower string 5 along with string 2?... bob

I sometimes do that change on my S12ExtE9 7+7 altho I dont have the 2 changes mentioned on the same lever.
My RKL lower 2 D#-D-C# & 9 D-C# (w 9 string creating the halfstop)
My P7 lower 10 & 5 B-Bb (Easy to hit w right foot when I already have used the RKL)
It is quite useful if one likes to play around w chords using strings 5 2 1 or 6 5 2 1
At the 8 fret it would give on strings 5 2 1, G -> Gm -> D

| It's funny Bob,I just put that on my Carter yesterday to see if there would be conflicts.it worked well until I tried the Emmons split...it cancels having unisons on two and five! Of course..LOL |

geez.. I just lost all respect for our magnanamous host...
I thought it was an odd choice when he asked me to do it, and still do.. It seems like that pull would be more advantageous on a V lever.... bob

Some people don't like vertical levers. Some people don't care for unison effects. Neither of those things are necessary to make good music.

Never heard of that change before. I can see where it might work with slow songs or 4/4. I lower #2 to a D and #10 to a Bb on the RKR. This opens up a lot of C6th on the E9th tuning. I don't care for vertical KL'ers either. I get unison sounds using #1 & #4 w/C pedal(Emmons set up). I don't lower #5, B note. I slide back one fret using the 2nd pedal(G# to A) and add the RKL which raises the E's to get the #5 lower on strings 5,6 & 8. LKL lowers #6 G# to a G also. Lowering #10 B to Bb, #6(G# to G) can be added for a lower on strings 6,8 & 10. Back up 2 frets, use 6,8 & 10 with B lowered to Bb, add the G# to A
pedal and "Hold It" can be played on E9th. The 1 to 4 change on this, I get at the 4th fret with the RKL which raises my E's. Still on 6,8 & 10. Thanks. |
