Wow, last night on a gig I was just playing along and all of a sudden my 8th string E broke and unraveled near the changer. I've broken a bunch of 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, and 10ths but never an 8th string. Has this ever happened to any of you? Even when I was playing 6 nights a week for years I never broke one of those. I guess maybe it was a bad string. The brand was JagWire which I bought a Scotty's a few years ago. I finally put a set on a couple of months ago. I guess I'll go back to my old trusty Ernie Ball strings.

I myself never really liked the jagwire strings due to the way the string is wrapped at the ball end, and the same goes for GHS strings, but I like sit strings and Ernie balls and D'addarios which I used on my carter Double 10 and the sit's on my MSA double 10. My Msa U12 is D'addarios, I get better sustain with these strings. what happened to you is the wound part of the string wore out and like a spring broke leaving the steel wire core there and tension was lost, this happens to wound strings. |

I have very little time I've played PSG (3 months) but 40 years playing 6 string acoustic and electric guitar. Certain strings on guitar tend to break more often, but I've certainly broken all of them many times (not all at once except maybe for those windmill days). Since I've played PSG though, I think I've broken 3 or 4 strings and I just wouldn't be surprised at any certain string breaking, especially one that sees a fair amount of bending.

I still have the original EB's that came with my Carter last November. I popped two 3rd's since then. They still sound good! What a cheap bastard! I think I'll change them out this weekend just for S & G's. Great strings!

Two 3rds broke inside of 5 months, and you still say "great strings"? Not the words I'd use!

I have gone back to buying short supplies of strings for both the Steel and the Tele' instead of multiple sets that may be hangin' out in the pack-a-seat for unlimited time.
Ya know what I learn't ?
They still break when I play a lot !
I have been using Cobra's..and they seem to be pretty fair in the life cycle, I do change the 3rd string very often though , especially before the weekend gigs if I have been burning the candle at home practicing.
This 8th string break is sort of like all of a sudden the 6th string breaks on the Tele'..you're lookin' at it thinkin' "HUH ??? "...
When the wound part gives up..the party's over ..

I tried some Jagwires back in July I think. I have to say I wasn't impressed with the sound or the service. When I called, the lady I spoke with on the phone wasn't very helpful, in fact she was sort of rude. I mentioned that I had thought about starting my own web store and inquired about discounts if I bought them by the case she said "well just who are you?!?!" Well if she had listened when I first started talking to her, she would have known who I was. I should have just cancelled the order then and there, but, I had heard so much about Jagwire strings, I wanted to try them. Oh well, live and learn. I'll stick to Emmons or Cobra's from now on.

Sorry, Tony, I'll TRY to keep it "FOCUSED" pertaining the String "Thread" for ALL of US here.Sometimes I read this SGF 20 times a day, & When you make a living being a Jeweler, you HAVE to STOP every so often and give your EYES a rest after "setting" 20 3MM DIMONDS in a VERY SMALL "CLUSTER." So, I "LOG ON" to the SGF when I need an EYE Break. And, This is where I get my "Daily Dose" of HUMOR for the Day. BTW, The other day, I had to use my #10 Visors (For Diamond Setting) to RESTRING my "Tele," because I have a "Hipshot" on it, and those 3 SMALL holes on it are a "WHOPPIE" to get those 3 strings "Threaded." I STILL have trouble with that "G" string though. |

Well I'm sticking with Jagwire strings!
I've had only one (1) faulty Jagwire string over the past several years that I've been buying and using them: it was a broken twist on an .022 plain which evidently occurred during the winding process. I told Danny about it and he immediately sent me 2 replacement .022's which were fine, at no charge.
Of all the string brands out there, Jagwire nickels simply seem to sound best and function best on my LeGrande. They also last longer than any of the other brands I've used and they are uniform from set to set.
Think about this the next time you string up with some major brand strings and one of them goes bad or breaks: What will happen when you call up GHS, D'Addario, Ernie Ball, etc? NOTHING, because these companies are so big that they don't feel that it's necessary to stand behind their product once it's on the customer's guitar. If a Jagwire string is defective, you call up Danny Hullihen and he makes it right with you, and right away too.
My money is and will continue to be on Jagwire Strings every time, not only on my steel but on my 6-string guitars, lap steel, and dobro as well. I think they are GREAT strings.

Jerry: I think you may just have come across a lemon string. It happens. I used to break the wrapping on my 10th string and one day (duh), I realized I was leaning on that string with my right hand, so every time I engaged the A pedal, I was in effect, sanding the wrapping on the string. But to answer your question, I have broken wrapping on the 8th string, inexplicably once or twice. Chalk it up to a faulty wrapped string. |

After All These Years I have used every string made but when I went to Jagwire I didn't have to look anymore! Jagwire tunes up better and the intonation is the best I have ever used. With all the pedal work on both E9th and C6th. they work for me day after day. Try a set, you will make the change!!
