Anyone having this problem with a S.B.type mech? Raising it again returns it to pitch. If you're out there Ricky, have you run into this?Every thing is well lubed and appears to work properly.I'm starting to get the feeling that there is slop in the main bridge axle.

What is an S.B. type of mechanism?

Most all keyed guitars return sharp a little bit, IF the string is raised and then lowered.

This phenomenon is called "hysterisis" and was described eloquently by Tom Bradshaw 30 yrs ago. It is believed by some that cause is due to all the string not coming back over the roller when it is lowered and released. I agree, since keyless guitars have almost NO hysterisis.

Of course I do not know how much yours is coming back sharp. But if it is a keyed guitar, most will come back sharp a tad when all is working correctly.

Yes I've run into this quite often...on the Shobud; but mostly all pedal steel mechanism as Carl eluded to the histerics prob.
I have fixed the prob though on several that I've worked on and it's a matter of certain spring tension and guaging.
First off make sure you use a .018p on the 5th string...>...Now take off the Raise spring or at least unhook it from the bracket that is mounted on the bottom of the guitar...>and tighten up the lower spring as much as you can stand...>now you'll have to readjust your throw as it will lower moreso now that the raise spring is not hooked up.....and also make sure your 5th string is as straight in line from Roller to tuning key post....and that the roller is free and rolls nicely....>>but also these shobud rollers will buzz a little in the slot; so drop you a bead of 3&1 oil right on top of the string/roller and it will go away.
Have fun.

Thanks Ricky. This prob. is a little more than normal hysterisis.I've been using .017 so I'll try an 18.I removed the raise springs long ago,not seeing any practicality for them.I'll let you know.Rusty

Lube your rollers at the headstock end of the neck.
