I recently acquired a 10-string, 22.5" scale lap steel. Have been playing 6-string with an E on top for about a year.

I am leaning toward setting it up with the standard E-C-A-G-E-C (high to low) on the middle six strings, and installing a D first, G second, A ninth, and F tenth string. I believe Billy Robinson uses a similar tuning.

Would be interested in any arguments for or against that tuning, and any and all alternatives.

On six-string, I always loved having the E on top. I also loved tuning the low string to C# on occasion. So when I got a 10 string non-pedal, I tune it:

1. E (high)
2. C
3. A
4. G
5. E
6. C#
7. C
8. A
9. F
10. D (low)

From bottom to top, I'd recommend: C G Bb C E G A C E G. The low C is an .072. This is a combination of most of the 6 and 8 string C6 tunings.

Thanks, guys, for your replies. Excellent suggestions, all.

Hope to have the disintegrated plastic tuner buttons replaced by the end of the weekend; looking forward to stringing it up and experimenting.

You should look also the the 2 Mike Neer's tuning, he is a great player and have a nice D10 Clinesmith with 2 variations of C6 tuning.

I like Tom Morrell's 10-string E13 tuning, but with B on string 10 instead of low E. It's very close to E9 PSG tuning, which is probably why if feels so comfortable to me. I tried a couple of extended C6 tunings on 10-string, but I keep wandering back to TM's E13. Just my preference.
