Topic: is your guitar in tune at various frets |

I just tuned my open strings using a peterson hd strobe tuner. I checked the first string with bar at frets 1,3, 5 12 ..... The bar has to be placed well past the fret to show in tune while checking the strobe. Is there an adjustment i can make.

Yes. To your eye-brain connection. Unless you have the wrong fretboard, the bar will be over the fret IF YOU ARE LOOKING STRAIGHT DOWN. But with the torso centered at 15, parallax will play games with you. Your only answer is to get used to it.

| If you are checking your guitar at anything other than the open position (no bar) DO NOT USE any other preset than equal or you will pull your hair out because it will not work. I'm not smart enough to know why but I have chased that dog before and even had a guitar sent to me to repair because of that very reason. Recheck it w equal temp and you will be relieved. |

| Of course, the frets are spread for "ET", so the tuner has to be too if you wanna test on the frets. |

Lane and Jim are right, of course Lane is most the time and Jim always is! Do yourself a favor and google parallax it is a real eye opener, no pun intended!

Lane. This is definitely not a parallax issue, i thought so too at first. The bar beind the fret aa half inch is not a parallax issue. Ithink Jim has hit the nail on the head. When i use the peterson strobe and tune straight up i am dead on at every fret.

I'd just use your ears to tune your hands, and disregard the tuner as you play

I just purchased the Peterson tuner and was trying various sweetners and checking the accuracy at different frets. I started to put in my original post that this was a parallax issue, i wish someone woukd check this out on their instrument.

No. No one's is. At least not with straight frets.
If you were playing six-string, for example, and you wanted every note to be in tune at every fret on every string, you'd need one of these:
The nice thing about playing steel or slide is that you get to adjust your frets to be in tune as you're playing.

The way i compensate for the problem you are discussing,, depending on how you set at your steel guitar, i set more to the pickup end looking at my bar hand, making sure i can see a small space between the bar and the Fret. That's the lower frets to the left, the farther down the neck the less space Sounds crazy doesn't it? If you don't see any space between the fret and the bar you will likely be sharp.
Don't take my word for it, try it and see.

| It's not worth your while obsessing about tuning meter readings at various frets. Spend that time listening carefully. Your ears must be your guide once the bar is on the strings. You will get better at it but, I admit, it can be a slow and painful process. That is definitely worth your while. |
