Steve, I'm glad I could shed a little light. This guitar is really a wonder of engineering. And, as you can tell, I'm happy to talk shop about it with anyone who will listen.

Hanz, good eye man! You are correct. RKR and RKL have two cross rods assigned to them, the lever actuated one or the other. This is accomplished with a see-saw looking lever that rocks when you engage the lock lever. The see-saw has a notch in it which grabs a pull lever

The yellow arrow indicated the lever actuated by the lock.
The red arrow points to the see-saw lever
The blue arrow points to the bolt that engages the notch in the see-saw to select which cross shaft is actuated. On the right of the knee lever you see the other end of the see-saw and the other cross shaft w/ levers and bolt.

Regarding the 3rd string breakage, I think the trick is to pull the string really tight before you use the keyless tuner. If you have to crank the tuner too far, the string gets bend over a severe angle, which has broken my 3rd string (upon tuning up to pitch) a time or two. I relieved the area where the break angle was too great, and I use a wood dowel to pull the string tight before locking it down and tuning up to pitch with the tuning keys.

Well hot damn. I popped the 3rd string on my D10 Excel Superb last night & just destroyed 2 more trying to replace it tonight. Before sacrificing the last one in the house I decided to go to the forum & do a search for "breakage", and this is the first thread that comes up. Looks like it's off to Scottys tomorrow for some reinforced .11s.

Hi -
There was a thread on this issue on breaking 3rd strings

http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=1877171&highlight=#1877171

Hope that helps - not sure if you have the longer scale or keyless guitar

I'm on my 4th Excel U-12, 8 & 8. Just got it July 2014. No lock lever--never used it--24 1/2 neck. Love it! I thru my "Li'l Izzy" away--no need for it with Mitsuo's new pick-up. Anyone want to buy the Lil Izzy cheap? The best guitar I've ever owned & they don't break strings!

Thanks, Roger. I read through that thread & tried reinforced strings. My Superb is 25" scale AND keyless. The solution for me was a George L reinforced .011. I broke 2 GHS reinforced and then 2 SIT reinforced before getting the George L to stay on. It seems as though the George L has nylon casing around the braided end, and the braid extends farther than the GHS or SIT. By the time I got it to pitch, part of the braid was over the roller, where the string kept breaking. No bare string over roller nut= no snappy.

Yes George. It came with a superlight case too. I sold this guitar a few years ago just because I needed the extra cash then...

Carlos, one thing I like about a keyless, is how neat they appear on stage, and how compact, clean, neat they are, while playing one. I played an old Sho~Bud years back. And my goodness, I can't believe how big they appear to me now, just the feel, and how heavy they are. I needed help lots of times just carrying it in. Best move I made after ditching that gawd awful ZB I had. If I don't like where I'm sitting on stage, I take one hand, and move it over. I take up no room at all. They may pry my hand off my Whitney, at gun point, but i'll never sell her. Very Happy

Carlos, I don't think the two are the same. I don't think Mitsuo Fujii ever had a presence in this country.
The Excel steels are made in Japan.

I think the guy in Washington was a dealer/distributor. It's the same Excel.

One of the things I love the most about the keyless system is the compactness, as you guys mentioned. If you're going for small and lightweight, it can't be beat. I too started with a ZB...with horns.. a D-10. I couldn't get rid of that one fast enough.

To have a 12 string single body guitar that carries full D-10 capability is truely awesome.

When I got my Excel in Seattle 20 years ago the guy I bought it from said it came from a shop in Cheney. It is the same and Mitsuo Fuji has sold me parts before.

Are there other U.S. Dealers besides Scotty's Music in St. Louis? Are they still a dealer, or has that changed with Scotty's passing?

It's a killer guitar, it's light, sounds great and is an engineering marvel. Mr. Mitsuo Fujii is a really nice guy, I talked with him about some of the features after I bought it.

Mike, what a cool guitar!
