Might be interesting to hear what our New Years resolutions (relative to steel guitar) would be,,,,,other than "practice" more. Here are 3 that I think would be helpful to me,,,and maybe others.
1. Make a more definite distinction between practice, noodling, and playing,,,,and stick with one or the other.
2. Work out 1,2,or 3 songs to "take out" and "show off" with,,,,(beginners goal would be a simple version,,,,seasoned players would be complex).
3.MOST IMPORTANT!!!,,,GET OUT AND PLAY,,,with others.
Let's hear other ideas,,,or expand on these,,,whatever,,, |

For me, it's Sonny's #1. As an ex-teacher, I annoy myself by sitting down without a clear target. Time is no less precious just because I'm retired. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

I printed Sonny's resolutions and have it on my wall to remind me everday these three things are necessary for me to be a more accomplished player. Thanks Sonny...excellent _________________ GFI Ultra SD-10; Nashville 112; Hilton pedal, George L Cables; Pearse bar; Live Stings;Walker seat by Billy Knowles. |

Charlie, those studies are truly fascinating. When I practice I tend to go at one thing until it stops getting better and then move on to something else, and then another. And then I feel bad for not showing more perseverance, so I go back to the first thing again. I seem to have stumbled on a kind of random practice without realising it might actually be beneficial.
And it must prepare you better for performance, where you get just the one shot at everything. I'm no baseball expert, but I don't see how hitting strings of identical pitches would prepare you for a real game. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!
