Probably posting too early as usual ( I just worked this out today) but what the heck. I had a few hours between surviving Costco and the Mall today to work out this solo chord melody version of Errol Garner's Misty on my '52 Magnatone.

Pretty cool, Andy. I like the string pulls at the end. Your Magnatone looks very clean!

"...between surviving Costco and the Mall"

Man, does that sound familiar. I've been there many times!

Thanks. Yeah, very clean, if a bit eye-popping in its design. These are undervalued steels, I think. With the right amp (which I don't have) they sound wonderful.

Hey Andy,

My second lap steel that I owned when I was a kid was a 1950'S Magnatone (MOTS). It was my first electric steel and I thought that it was the coolest guitar! Here's a pic. That's me on the left.

Doug......I started rather young but my only regret is that I didn't always stay with it. Sad

Thanks, Andy, for posting this very nice and enjoyable rendition of one of my favorite tunes. I keep watching the clip over and over again and again.

Love those interesting string pulls. Just beginning to seriously explore them myself.

Jerry - great pic!
Jack, thanks. String pulls are fun to do. You have to reposition your hand on the fly so it's sometimes tough to grab 'em and stay in tempo. The cool thing with manual pulls on a lap steel, vs a pedal steel, is that you can add vibrato. You definitely have to practice and use your ear as it's easy to be slightly out of tune. Jr. Brown sometimes lowers strings on the fly using his tuning pegs. Don't know how the heck he pulls that off.

My bass player came over as I was watching your video. He listened for a second and said, "He's playing 'Misty.'" He listened a little more and approved. He liked the bends behind the bar. His father is a jazz piano player, so he's heard a lot of versions of Misty over the years so the fact that he didn't cringe is a big deal. Wink

I had a Magnatone for a while. I don't remember when or why I sold it. It's like one day I didn't have it anymore. Mine was gray.

I keep the critical bar low to the ground. Not inducing cringing is the goal! Smile

Nice Andy. I like the chord voicing's you got out of a 6 string C6 tuning.
