Topic: What color should I choose???? |

Hi,
I am new to the forum: I am a long time guitar player who wants to learn how to play the pedal steel. I've spent a lot of time on the forum reading about the "newbie" issues, i.e.: What guitar should I buy? New or used? S? SD? D? 6/10/12 string? E9? C6? What pickups? All pull? Push-pull? Pull/Release?
I've whittled away most of these questions, and I think I've made a decision on what guitar I want to buy. The only question I have left, and probably the most important choice:
What color should I choose? I am torn between black and red.
But: What color is best???

Some folks swear black sounds better, which is impossible. It's a mental thing. Red will hide scratches and swirls better and longer. I've got a used black Emmons and a new red Mullen. So I chose Red over black when I had a choice. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

I have to agree Tommy. Red to me plays better, sounds better
and sure is a lot prettier. Blue is my 2nd choice, and for me
the easiest playing steels are the Rittenberry's and Mullen's.

Seriously. For the time being, you need a single neck 10-string with 3 pedals and 4 knee levers.
The general consensus around here is that the best entry level steel is the Zum Stage One. Nobody (as far as I know) has ever complained about them.
The Stage One will allow you to get started. You may decide to upgrade to a better steel after you’ve got some experience, but you’ll know enough to decide what kind of steel you want, (including what color.)

Black is the choice if you have any doubts......
While my various black guitars have always sounded good, it has been my brown guitars which have the tone to die for. I have been though many more guitars than I have figures to count them on, but for me brown has been the lucky color.

Hello Bob,
Check out the Zum Encore PSG. It's an all pull guitar with 3 raises & 3 lowers. It comes standard with 3 pedals & 5 knee levers & a case is included. The color choice is yours.

I would get a black / blue / red / white / etc color guitar! BUT, I prefer this one:
I don't have one, but if anyone feels led, it's not too late for a late Christmas gift!

Bob, they are several entry guitars out there that would fit the bill without breaking the bank. Jim's advice on the stage one is spot on but don't know if you can find one or not. Fred Justice builds a great guitar called Pro Lite, Mullen has the Encore and there are several great deals in the for sale section now like the MSA, The Magnum, MCI. All those are great guitars. You would want an all pull guitar and stay away from some home made or no name steel. As far as color, that is your personal choice. I myself like a plain guitar, solid color with no V emblems or two tone fronts. That just takes away from the looks to me but that is my personal opinion.

For those who say it's nonsense that the black ones sound better, I say "hogwash."
All of us are at least slightly synesthesiac, and if a guitar LOOKS better, we'll perceive it as both playing better and sounding better. And we'll feel better about playing it.

| I play a Jackson Blackjack Custom with three pedals, four knees, and it's a great guitar. It's solid black and sounds awesome! Before that guitar, I played a rosewood Emmons SG with three pedals and one knee, then a GFI Ultra D-10 with eight pedals, five knees, and it sounded and looked beautiful too. The Jackson Blackjack Custom is a great pro model steel for any level steel player. |

Thats called the placebo effect.
Colour is personal preference really go with your gut not what you want some one else to convince you into.
Ps my favorite is black  |

You may want to consider your personal preference first but with half-an-eye on resale. The more outlandish your colour choice then the harder it'll be to sell.
I'll usually opt for black - I like it, and it's probably the most popular finish.
