Hello,

I was interested in getting a few of the "Up From The Top" series to further my playing. When I talked to Fran she was pretty adamant that I start with Pedal Steel Techniques and Right Hand Alpha (she's very cool by the way). She has both as a package deal for $99.00. I'm sold on Right Hand Alpha, I'm sure my right hand could use some work.

I'm worried that "Pedal Steel Techniques" would be too basic for me. I've been at the pedal steel for 2 years now, have made it through a good chunk of videos, Winnie Winston's book and Dewitt Scott books.

Was wondering if anyone else has gone through the courses and was hoping I could get a summary of what is in 'Pedal Steel Techniques'.

It may be basic but everytime I go back over some of the basics, I find something that I missed before or at least find a lick that I heard and can improvise on.
By all means, get every study course of Jeff's you can buy, especially the Up From the Top series. I still refer back to his material from time to time. He was the Master Steel Guitar Teacher. Take out a bank loan if you have to but get all of his material.

Pedal techniques is just what it says. Jeff tells you what he thinks you need and gives you plenty of practice excercises. Fran got me into it after a long layoff. I kinda wondered if I really needed it but now I'm sure I did.

Buy whatever courses you want. You know yourself better than somebody talking to you on the phone does.

I personally spend most of my practice time on basic technique every day. I think you need one on one personal lessons to properly focus on that stuff though. Nothing helped my playing more than having a good teacher correct things I was not aware I was doing.

I know what you're saying. I muddled my way through for 35 years and never really progressed. I got pretty good at finding chords and mashing the A & B peadals. I'm 73 years old and finally getting serious enough to learn...The right way.

Of course that's just me. You'll have to assess your own skill levels and make your own choices. You can always sell the courses here if they're not to your liking.

Good Luck... rc

Yeah, I hear ya.

I guess my main concern is the video costs $75.00 and there really isn't much info on that site about the video. I hear all the rave reviews about his course and for the Up From The Top series they have an entire page describing the course. That could explain why I'm gung ho to buy that set, but not so wild about this techniques.

I have to say there's a teacher on Youtube named Jeff Rady, every single one of his promos he shows you what to expect from the lesson. I've bought three of them so far, and every single one of them I've come out the other side being able to achieve what the lesson promo outlines.

I just wish there was more to their write up than just "This course gives all the fundamentals for getting started on the E9th 10 string tuning, using three floor pedals and three knee levers. $75.00"

At any rate, that's cool you are back into the steel. I'm hooked on it, practice every night and am very determined to get good on this instrument.

Just wanted to give an update...

I decided to buy the set, and I called up Fran. Fran flat out rules. Everything I said in the post above I take back, I should have just directed all of my questions above to Fran. She walked me through the sets and how they benefited Jeff.

Told me that Jeff used to spend days working on his technique before a big gig. Talking to her just reinforces the notion that to be great at something you gotta put in the hours.

While searching the forum for info on 7th chords, I found this thread which I think answered your question.

For what it's worth, I think you made the right choice. You will most likely buy the Up From The Top Series anyway, even if it covers some of the same material as what you bought. Remember that repetition is key to learning!!

That's a good thread...if I was around back then I would have just referred the guy to calling Fran. I'm definitely going to get the a&b and work my way through the up from the top series. I like learning from a lot of different sources, and have made a tremendous amount of progress in my second year of playing pedal steel.

I'm getting close to the point where I think I'll be able to play/record with others. The ultimate goal is to create my own music and after talking to Fran I'm convinced I will get there sooner than later with the help of their courses.

I intend to buy all my courses directly from Fran to support her business.

Mark, I didn't know you had that much time in title. If you're confident with your right hand technique, you may consider the "Up from the Top" series A & B pedals to start with and go back to the Techniques course later.
