I was wondering if someone could give some examples of songs using this type of chord passage. One example, with pedals is this, but any other key is fine:

Am AmMaj7 Am7 D

8A 7ABF 8 5AB

Any other thoughts on how to look at this would be appreciated, especially if it can be used in improvisation. I'm just trying to understand where or how this would fit into a song.

I know it's not country, but think "Stairway To Heaven".

Another great example would be Eric Clapton's Let It Grow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXDf9UwHGF4

What is really going on is Am - AmMaj7 (E7) - Am7 - Am6 (D)

The chords in parens could be substituted for the chord before it.

Nice one Will - you beat me to it. I love the descending run accompanying the words "I will say the only words I know..." in Michelle.
Sat at the guitar (which I don't play much now due to 'trigger finger' problems) and also came up with:
25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago - needs a bit of syncopation.
I can also get a workable version of 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'.
I know there are more examples but I'm drawing a blank just at the moment...

Thanks guys. I definitely hear the Stairway to Heaven riff in those tunes. A very recognizable progression.

Cry Baby Cry - The Beatles

As a part of a longer chord sequence, how about:

My Way
Something
Hot Burrito #1
Life on Mars
Crazy (Willie Nelson, not Gnarls Barkley!)

Look up the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain on YouTube for their take on a tune by George Frederick Handel...

Must go for a lie down, now...

You can use this in Bye, Bye, Blackbird over the iim - V7 change. Just try it in any swing tune with that change.
