I am wanting to get a shobud D10 this christmas. From what i hear, the rack and berrel with the two hole changers it the most favorite system. I played an early 70's LDG a couple times and I'd have to agree with what they are saying. And this LDG had the round front, wooden neck, etc. It sounded really good.

But i would love to find a red birdseye laquer like the one Damir Besic has but I prefer not to have a super pro or pro 2 custom. Although I may still have to go that route.

Please shoot me an email if anyone is willing to sell me a their who-bud

I have a tobacco colored "Professional" I'd sell.

It's 8X4. I just went through all of the mechanical stuff. Every metal part came off the guitar. It plays well and sounds amazing. This gutar is a "Rack and barrel" it does not have the two hole pullers.

I'd be happy to set the guitar up with your copedent.

The finish is checking a little bit, but overall it's a good one. Shoot me a pm or email if you'd like more info.

Justin

well it is a great guitar for sure but for clarity, it's either rack and barrel OR two hole pullers, it's not one and the same.

The Professionals certainly had the single raise, single lower system with rack and barrel. The number of barrels behind the racks, per rod, determined how many pulls per string. At some point around early 70's Pro II's and Pro III's came out with a new changer which used two hole pullers, some used the barrels behind them and the later ones used two hole pullers with set screws. I believe the changer used dictated which pullers.. My Pro III had the two hole pullers with set screws.

Others, such as James or Ricky can clarify.

You are right Tony. I've read that a lot of people tend to not like the later models when a lot of the parts went to pot metal. In your opinion, which who-buds are the ones you'd prefer.

Well I like the Pro I that I have but I am still seeking an older round front Professional rack and barrel or a Pro I , Pro II or Pro III with two hole pullers.

The later model Pro I still sounds pretty darn good and after a complete dis assembly and cleaning it plays very well. In the process I actually broke two pot metal pullers, I have some parts on order with James which will take care of that. The cast pullers cracked at the rear of the cross shaft at the opposite end of the set screw.

I know you didn't ask me, but it depends on the mechanics of the Pro II Custom. Some of them have the two-hole puller undercarriage. If the Pro II Custom has the triple raise/double lower changer with five-hole pullers--the same parts as a Super Pro (with the dreaded "pot metal")--I'd recommend the Super Pro: more compact body dimensions, a little less heavy, more knee levers (stock), and modern height offset between the two necks. Pro II has 3/4" height difference, Super Pro has 1/4", like Emmons and really all modern steels.

My $.02.

I strongly prefer two-hole pullers over rack-and-barrel, any day. Barrels behind two-hole pullers is an outstanding guitar. The rack-and-barrel guitars sound great, but they're just a hair 'clunky' for me. YMMV, but that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

But I have to say that I've tried LDGs with both barrels-behind-2-hole-pullers and a ca. 75 or 76 two-hole pullers into a 2+1 changer - I bought the 2+1 changer version. To my tastes, it's the best Sho Bud I've ever played. I consider this the precursor to a modern all-pull guitar from a setup/playability point-of-view, but with a cool old-school Sho Bud vibe. The only downside I see is that I believe the changer fingers are pot-metal, but the rest is not. No crap pot-metal parts underneath, it looks like the earlier 2-hole-puller version otherwise. I may someday stick some proper changer fingers in there, the best of all Sho Bud worlds, to me.

I dominantly play my Zums and my Franklin. But there's something about that old Sho Bud sound, and that two-hole-puller into the 2+1 changer gets both the old vibe and some of the more modern playability/flexibility in one package. It reminds me in many ways of my Franklin.

I picked up a mid-60s Fingertip D10 last spring - one of these days I'll get around to tearing it down and putting it back together. You can see from the undercarriage that it's gonna be a bit sensitive. But thar's something about those really old Sho Buds, fer' sure.

And, to clarify even more, the 2 hole pullers w/barrels had the same changer (1up/1down) as the rack & barrel gtrs.
They went to the 2up/1down changer at the same time they switched to the nylon tuners.

There's bound to be a few exceptions to that.
After all, it's the Sho-Bud way...

Yes that would be correct, same changers 1 up + 1 down.

And me, I would buy any Pro II or Pro III with the earlier pull system, ( 2 hole either way) and I would pass on the later Sho Buds with the newer pot metal pullers, I already have one ! It's not that they are bad, they are different, I believe all Super Pro's are pot metal systems, excellent axes though. James Moorehead makes aluminum pullers for these guitars, thats an excellent improvement.

The Super Pro featured pot metal levers and lever brackets, which could break without warning.
Other than that, they're fine. But that's a big problem if it breaks on a gig.

Been there, done that. TWICE. The reason I no longer own a Super Pro. Good guitar other than that. They never break for me, except on the band stand.
