Well...after dropping and breaking a glass bowl on my finger,(it was my wife's fault of course,it happened when she entered the room) I'm finally getting around to focusing on my thumb index finger only technique. It's helping break my bad habit of overplaying triads.
So I'm sure some of you pros and experienced players have some good stories about adapting, improvising and overcoming.Let's here them!

Encouraging to hear it's not just me. The triads, I mean, not the glass bowl! D'oh! _________________ Williams 700 series keyless U12,

Sorry about the sore finger. I played a job one night after a 125 HP Chrysler outboard came down on my right thumb, pinching it between the lower unit and the transom on the boat. It basically bounced on my thumb. I had to go to the music store and by the largest thumb pick I could find, then we heated it in the green room with a blow dryer enough to soften the plastic and make the thumb pick fit.
I feel your pain pal.
It however taught me how much I really DO rely on the thumb. I put a finger pick on my ring finger and tried to use it. Learn some new techniques. |

About 1988, I managed to have an accident with a table saw, which tore my thumb open like a tulip. I lost a 1/4" to the length and considerable thickness to the last segment of it.
I really thought that my picking days were over, but, after it healed I had to find the smallest thumb pick that I could find. Even that, sometimes, causes problems. I don't have any feelings in that segment of my thumb and have to watch the pick so it doesn't spin sideways. I don't like to apply anything to my thumb because of the thin skin that's there, so, I work around it the best I can. The slower tunes are easy, but, the fast tunes can be a crapshoot sometimes. Unfortunately, it'll never be as it once was. |
