I went and saw my good friend Bob Hempker who is back playing steel with Loretta Lynn. They were in Branson at the Andy Williams on Nov.23.Bob sounded even better than I remember from his days in Branson and even more important he's just an all around good guy. Loretta also sounded amazing. If you want to see a first class real country show with great steel guitar in it go see the Loretta Lynn show when it comes to your town |

Ted,
I agree with you. Bob was certainly a "great meet" while in Nashville in Sept.
There are various degrees of friendliness or should I say, 1st impressions vary when meeting Nashville Superlatives. Bob, in my opinion, exceeds those 1st impression objectives.
Bob is such a nice guy and a great player!

Hi Charley! I spent a couple hours this evening working on the undercarriage of a blue Emmons wood neck bolt-on that Bob played years ago with Loretta. I understand that all the instruments in that band were blue probably because of Loretta's hit song "Blue Kentucky Girl". It was already Day set-up when I acquired it but I am making some minor changes in the Day set-up and looking forward to playing it very soon. From what I can tell so far it is a great sounding push pull. Bob is a great guy whom I have gotten to visit with several times. When Peavey first came out with the Profex II Bob told me how to program it to use as an effects unit without using the pre-amp part of it. I am happy that he is back with Loretta. He is a great player.

Charley, I am holding this guitar and another (black) push pull for a friend who wants a push pull after he decides which one he wants. He used to own this blue one and seems to be leaning toward it. He is not yet ready to buy one so I told him I would keep both until he decides. This blue one or the black one which is a tremendous sounding guitar will be for sale soon. The black one I am told started as a bolt-on but went back to the factory and was changed to cut-tail. It was purchased new by a major player who had some kind of endorsement with the Emmons Company so the guitar had several updates (so I am told and have no reason not to believe). He was one of the many great steel players for Ray Price thru the years. It is truly a wonderful sounding guitar and I am presently playing it at our Saturday night opry show. (The Little O'Oprey.)
I guess I can't write a SHORT story! Sorry.

Tommy, I don't have a Profex II at this time and my memory might not have it down perfect but I can tell you what needs to be accomplished to do it. It works on any chain of effects that are in series (have a + in front of them). If you hit the edit button and place the curser under an effect then hit edit button and move the curser to "mix" then hit the edit button you will see a value. REMEMBER THAT VALUE. Now hit edit, move the curser under the + to the right of that effect and hit edit, move the curser to "mix" and hit edit and you will see a value. REMEMBER THAT VALUE. Now all you do is to reverse those two values. One was 100 and the other was maybe 16 or so. I believe one is actually output and the other is mix. I am vague on that but the idea is to make the output 100 and the effect mix be the low number. If I could talk you thru it, it would be simple. I just need eyes on the display.
Actually, the first step is to hit edit, place he curser under the EQ which will read 3B, 4B etc. and hit the add/remove button to remove the EQ section which is the pre-amp. Keep in mind that there is no worry in messing up if you do something wrong because you are not permanently changing the program until you have it like you want it and actually hit the store button twice, the first time stores the new program and the second time places the stored program in the program number so you can leave it where it was or replace an unwanted program with it. There is one other important thing. After the last program in the chain the screen show blank but you must imagine that there is also a + there for that last effect, so you take the exact steps with that last effect that you did with all the others. When you hit edit and move the curser to that blank following the last effect, hit edit again, then place the curser under "mix" you will get a value reading so you reverse the values of that last effect and the value of that imagined +. I wish I could be more clear. If you want to call me I can walk you thru it, then you would be able to easily pass it on to anyone else who needed it. I was getting an overdriven signal and this procedure eliminated the pre-amp in the Profex II so I could use it as an effect unit with at the time two Session 400's and had a great sound.
If a guy is pretty adept with the Profex II all this direction could be shortened to this:
Remove the EQ section and reverse the output and mix values of each effect while realizing that the last effect in the chain also has an out value (the imaginary + following the last effect).

Loretta and Bob. It don't get any better that that. I remember Bob, Don Ballinger and one of Loretta's sons coming into Hidden Valley Ranch in Fremont, after a show in Oakland, when I was playing there in the mid-late 70's. We started "When a Tingle Becomes A Chill", then I saw Bob, and proceeded to totally fall apart. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . My buddy, and the bands guitar player, Dave Thornhill introduced me to Bob at the Midnight Jamboree one night. I remember thinking "what a nice guy". It would be a couple of years before I heard him play live and I remember thinking, "he's not only a nice guy, he's a great player too."

Question here? Was it Hal Rugg, John Hughey or Bob H. that played the intro and break in "When The Tingle Becomes A Chill"? (When it was first recorded) My guess is Hughey on the original cut. |

I don't know that Bob recorded any of the early Loretta hits. I believe someone told me it was John who played on it, but I wouldn't bet any money that it wasn't Hal either. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . The first time I met John, I asked him about the duets, and he told me it was him and Hal played the Loretta sessions. But, someone said that it was John, but that wasn't from a real knowledgable person. If anyone would know, it would be David. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . We're talking about three great players and people here... Bob, John and Hal.
As far as "When A Tingle Becomes A Chill" is concerned... it was, without question, Hal Rugg who recorded that hit record with Loretta.
Sincerely,

I had the pleasure of spending some time with Bob Hempker last night at Grand Casino - Mille Lacs, near Onamia, MN. We talked for a couple hours prior to the show. Great guy! Both he and Loretta sounded great, too!
