'55 fender triple neck stringmaster

Hi,
I just recently aquired a triple neck '50s fender steel from ebay.com.The wood finish looks quite aged, maybe a bit of rust, corrosion at the bridge plate, any advice, on clean up, restoration, tunings and string gauges is welcome

Rust/corrosion - use a metal polish with a fine grit (forgotten the name, comes in a little tube), most of that should buff out. Dirt/grime on finish - use a solvent with a high evaporation rate, like naptha, on a soft clean cloth. This will remove the gunk, but leave the finish. A complete re-finish is another thing, and I'll defer to somebody with more experience to talk to you about that. Tunings/gauges: click on "tunings" at the top of the page. Bob has listed a bunch of tunings and suggested gauges. Also, check out www.scottysmusic.com
for more of the same. Try A6 or C6, E13, and C#mi7. Many people will have many other ideas to follow . . .

Is this that guitar with the strong ghost of someone's name on the front apron?
If it is, although it does look like is has some pitting on the chrome and it sure looks like it has seen a lot of playing, I'd think long and hard before messing with the finish. You can't buy the look of age and distress that that is showing. Although there's nothing like buying a cherry old guitar (my '54 Stringmaster looks nearly immaculate) I think the wear on the wood of yours (if it's the same one) is real comfortable looking.

Richard: for the chrome, definitely Flitz
(probably what Robert refers to above). A true miracle drug for any fine metal polishing.
