I found this guitar at the used section Guitar Center. I thought it was a decent price and I want to get into the back neck. It looks like it needs a lot of work and cleaning up but there doesn't seem to be any permanent damage. None of the E9 neck is set up. It seems to have all the parts needed except nylon tuning nuts and the collars that go behind them. It may also need a few bell cranks. Other than that all the parts seem to be there (theres a bunch of rods in the case).

I got it for $1300 out the door. Is it worth all the time and money needed to make it work? I can return it if it's a bad deal.

I can't see the parts you need to be particularly expensive...two afternoons and a rodding chart and you've got a guitar worth 2x what you paid, can't see any downside with keeping it.

Cool. Thats what I thought. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't some weird Mullen that wasn't valuable as the others.

Does anyone know what model it is? I can't find it on their website. It seems old but all the parts look the same as the ones they're using now.

I think that will be the model before model names, called the "PRE-RP." An email to Mike Mantey with the serial number should get you the date. It should be easily worth twice the cost. And the nuts shouldn't cost much.

That is a nice guitar worth twice what you gave for. Looks like it needs a few bell cranks and the makers charge an arm and a leg for them, 25 to 35 bucks a piece I think. But the rods and nuts are inexpensive. Just a few parts and you'll have a nice rig. You may contact Mickey Adams and he can help you out.

It looks to be missing about 7,8, or 9 bell cranks on both but even if they were $30 apiece, would still be a heck of a deal.

Looks good, easy fixin's, can't go wrong with that beauty....

I don't think a person is a 'Dummy' for personalizing a guitar to their needs and selling as they left it, it was priced accordingly.

oh no...they 'are' a dummy if 'personalizing' an instrument means leaving it in a disassembled unplayable state.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm going to buy the parts from Mullen and do as much setting up as I can myself. This will be a good chance for me to learn how work on my steel. I'll take it down to Jim Palenscar for anything I can't figure out.

When installing pull rods how do I know which holes in the bell crank and end finger to put them in?

I'm assuming that the lower holes have shorter travel or cause greater tension but is there somewhere on the forum where I can find an explanation how to correctly do this?

Again thanks for all your help.

Ask Mike at Mullen for a rodding chart.

Mike should be able to give you a rodding chart, or there are several other charts out there. The leverage principles are the same (although the number of holes in each manufacturer's cranks can change things a bit, as they might be a bit longer or have lots of holes by staggering them).

There you go,this is the route I would go and it'll be right cause Mickey is one of the best on a Mullen.

Knowing GC.... He'd be lucky to Have gotten 500.00. My friend Del had his G2 S12 stolen last year and it wound up in a GC... They were asking 1200 for it...pretty clueless on steel values they are..

Mickey, Thanks for reaching out. I just got the parts in and I'm going to try to do as much as I can on my own. It'll be a good chance for me to learn how to work on these machines. If I hit any walls I'll let you know.
