Just how loose or tight do the screws have to be on P/P ali. necks to make a difference? I’ve tried messing about with mine and it sounds the same to me.
My P/P twin 10 has a good sound, but not as good as a another one I have tried, so I would welcome any help to improve the sound.

Dear Tony,

There are many variables to what and will not improve the PP tone of any given guitar, but may suggest that you do a thorough inspection of the changer settings:

Hand tune the entire changer.

Be sure that all of your in-tune raises stop out against the body of the guitar at the changer; then be sure that the stop screw (pedal stop) hits the stop bar at exactly the same time as the raise finger hits the body. Too much body contact can gouge the wood, not enough and there will be no contact "backfeeding" into the body. Do this for all raises, and take the time to be exact.

Also, be certain that all of your lowers hit the lowering tuning bolts with full contact. Look out for incomplete lowers as a result of the fish-hooks binding, and not allowing a full lower. (most common on Eb-E-F-F# changer).

Use the minimum balance spring that will effectively time your multiple changes.

There is oh so much more, but if you get this much, that's a start. There are many resources on this forum...do a search, and I'm sure you will find what you need...

Thanks John. I will say that I'm pretty fussy with the mechanics of my Steel as I am a Toolmaker by trade and try to get everything spot-on.

Tony:
Some years ago there was a wonderful book ,I believe written by Clem of the old steel guitar emporium. This book is called " Methodology and practice in pedal steel guitar.A guide to practical understanding and repair ". Some one out there has a copy I'm sure.It also covers " Push Pull" very well.If you can't locate this let me know..

I bought that book on how set up a PP direct from the Emmons Co a month or so ago. They sent it right out and it was invaluable to me.

Thanks lads for this info. I've had my P/P for 30 years now and am familiar with all the mechanical issues.
I know Buddy raised the issue of neck torgue some time ago, and it is this I would really appreciate some advice on.
Does this publication include neck torque and issues that affect the sound, or is it purely the mechanics?
