I there a way to determine the impedence of a Fender output transformer (4 ohm vrs 8 ohm) from the number stamped on it?

I'll have to get them out. I have two early BF showman heads. They look identical, except one runs 4 ohms and one runs 8. And I forget which is which. Give me an hour or so to write them down.

Put a digital ohm meter on the speaker output. The resistance should be well below 1 ohm. The one with the small value is the $ ohm transformer.

The Showman (single speaker) used an 8-ohm transformer, 022897.

The Dual Showman used a 4-ohm tranformer, 022889, which was the same one used in Twin Reverbs. Cool

If it's an early BF, the number would start with a 125.
Later 60's started using the 022 numbers.
