I am pretty sure they will not, I believe the Roland series of MIDI toys came on the market later. I looked at several MIDI interfaces in that time period but no longer remember the details.

From what I do remember there were magnetic pickups fed into a signal amp and then into the converter(roland). There were also photo and hall effect type sensors. I sorta thing the one mentioned here used an optic sensor. You could likely get a Roland type sensor to work but it would take some electronic modifications. Certainly this would not be plug and play.
