I have a Fender 8 string single neck from around 1953-54
The sound has always been very fat loud and rich in tone,

2 weeks ago it unfortunately went to the floor, It was in the case when it fell
but it somehow got damaged, the tone is much thinner now, more treble
and much less body, the tone is more dead and when i turn the tone control to the bass mode, the volume also goes completely down,!!

Anyone knows what happened and what the problem is ? Is the microphone ruined ?

I would be very glad if anyone experienced the same and know what the problem is !

Is it the type with the single chrome pickup (microphone) where the srings go through it like in the picture I attached?

If so, it sounds a lot like the problem I had with mine and the pickup may need to be rewound.

These are quite specialised and it may be hard to find someone who can repair it. If it needs to be rewound, the repair guy would have to make a special winder for it.

There are people in the US that would definitely be able to fix it for you and there is also someone I can recommend here in London who understands these pickups which might be easier and quicker if you can't find someone where you are.

He has rewound these pickups for both myself and a friend and already has the necessary equipment. We are both delighted with his work.

It might be worth getting someone to check the pickup with a meter to confirm if it really is broken before sending it off to someone in case it is just a problem with the wiring (I am sure someone else here will be able to tell you what readings you should be getting).

Thanks for fast reply Jeff,

yes exactly its that
kind of pickup, that makes sence, i let one instrument
Technician look at mine already, he tested it but the values
Were all okay, but i still want to try to rewound it i guess.

I have a friend over here in Sweden who has a exact same steel
but a doubleneck and he has the same problem, when we compared
them before mine had much fatter sound,
but now mine are the same, just lacking body
In the tone.

Do you have any contact info to that guy in London
maybe I can send it over and get it fixed. Smile

Big thanks

Hi Andre,

This is the place and Matt is the guy to talk to.
http://www.montysguitars.com/

Please tell him you heard about him from me (Jeff with the red quad Stringmaster).

The only thing is that, if the pickup tested OK on the meter, the problem is likely to be something else and it would not be practical to send the entire guitar over to him. Did your technician check the wiring/switches/volume and tone controls as well?

You need to be really sure it is definitely a problem with the pickup before sending it away.

Please take Jeff's suggestion and check the controls.
It is not unusual for a pot to be damaged from a fall.
If you measure the pickup with an Ohmmeter, it should be somewhere between 9 and 11 k.
I have a T8 with the same pickup.

If the Tone Control acts like a Volume Control, it could be a shorted capacitor or other short in the wiring. I agree with the others posting above: Completely check out the electric components and the wiring before pulling the Pickup for a rewind.

HTH. Good Luck!
