I have a Dalton "super pony" steel amp that was one of the best sounding amps I ever had. It has been worked on a few times and been running hot so in checking it out I accidently shorted out the speaker wires and took out an output transistor. I had it fixed, but was told it is on it's last leg. Now it works, but just doesn't play clean. I would like to find one like it that is in working condition. I would be interested in the whole amp, or just the working amp and chassis.

Would consider having it rebuilt into a working amp by someone who is knowledgeable and reasonable in price. It has had a peavey 1501-4 in it and I have also used an EV 8 ohm in it also. I just put a new reverb unit in it. email me if you can help. |

Thanks Henry. I spoke to a fellow at Magnolia who knew Jack and knows you and owns two Daltons. He gave me Derrell's number. I think I will call him and see what he says. I took the amp to a friend who builds amps and he said it isn't worth fixing again so I was looking to replace it or find one that worked but the cab, reverb or speaker were trashed and would make one good one out of it.
I'll follow up on that.

Jack Matthews played a Dalton Pony and don't know what happened to his. Jack Passed away in 2007 I think. Give, Derrell a call, he will fix it up for you. I remember they were good sounding amps.

Jerry, I think Dalton still lives in Little Rock. I bet Derrell Stephens can tell you how to get in touch with him if he is still there. Also, I believe Dan Sliter knows Dalton. I don't recall Daltons first name.

Jerry, I'm afraid that is quite possible. I am remembering more clearly. I had two Daltons and a guy was looking for one on the Forum. I met him in Conway and sold him the two amps. One had been fried and repaired but not good. This guy knew Mr. Dalton and was going to have him work on the bad one. I don't know if I can find to info on this sale or not but I will try. It would be in the forum archives.

Back in the '80s I worked on a brand new Dalton "Stony Pony" amp for Rhodes Music in Armbrust, PA. (Anybody remember Check Rhodes?) The amp came from the factory with two bias resistors connected to the wrong points in the output section. Once corrected, it was a great little amp, that sounded as good as any of the amps at that time.

The Dalton Stony Pony amp was built by Bob Dalton of Little Rock,
AR. He named the amp after Arkansas legendary steel man Johnny Stone. Mr. Stone passed away a few years ago. Bob Dalton is a very talented guitar player that I had the pleasure of working with several times. Zane Beck also endorsed the Stone Pony amp. I had the pleasure of playing through Zanes Stone Pony rig several times and was very impressed with quality. A few of these amps are still being used by local players here in Arkansas. If it were mine, I would have Mr. Stephens do the repairs and hang on to this rare classic.

| I know Bob Dalton very well and I am sure he is still very much alive and is still playing guitar . I am pretty sure he doesn't work on amps any longer . I don't think he even has a Stone Pony himself anymore . I'll try to contact him & see if I can get his permission to be contacted . If so, I will give his contact info privately . I doubt if he would want it posted here . A couple of friends of mine own one of these amps in good condition but I doubt if they would part with them . |

Zane Beck gave me my Dalton amp. It had a JBL D130 speaker in it. He also gave me a bar, set of picks, a new BMI volume pedal and set of blue Belden cables that I still use today. He gave me the stuff in 1979. Off topic a bit but Zane Beck was kinder to me than any one I have ever known in the steel guitar world. We had made a deal whereby I was to build him a set of kitchen cabinets for his lake cabin in exchange for him buiding me a new BMI D10. He delivered the guitar one day before I got home and he set it up in my living room. He just owed me a guitar but he left the cables, volume pedal, amp, bar, and picks as a gift I guess. I have told this story several times but I never get tired of telling it. He was as generous as any man I have ever known.

| Jerry , Zane was a very good friend to me as well as most everyone he came in contact with . We played music together many times . He did many favors for me as well . He was one of the nicest and most talented people I have ever met . He was truly one of a kind . I first met him at his home is Scranton,AR when I went & picked up a guitar that he built for me . Then he moved to Little Rock and became good friends and worked together a lot . He is sorely missed . |

I am surely happy to hear that Mr. Dalton is still with us. And for the other info and checking for me as you did Dennis, I appreciate also. My amp is still working after Joe Twist worked on it for me, but it runs very hot and the longer I play through it the more is distorts. I was looking for one that was kind of beat up that I could buy cheaply and use it to make one good unit since my cab is in very nice shape. The 1501 in it needs a new basket, since I can't seem to get it to stop rubbing the sidewalls, but I put an 8 ohm EVM speaker in it which sounds great in itself. Sure made the amp heavier though.
I have been in contact with Joe Twist again and I do believe I will be sending the chassis to Darrell and have him rebuild it since he is familiar with these amps.
Oh yes, thanks to Doug also for sending me a copy of the schematics. |
