I never think of this as a Hank Thompson number. It was written by Rudy Sooter in the 1940s. I learnt it from Mike Seeger singing with the New Lost City Ramblers. The words sound like something Woody Guthrie would have written, about dust bowl refugees heading west and finding that California is not the paradise they expected. Of course, there's a connection between Mike Seeger and Woody Guthrie. Woody was a family friend to the Seegers and sang with Pete in the Almanac Singers.
I like the steel playing on it; it has a 1950s feel about it; and, of course, I've always been a Hank Thomposon fan. |
