Anyone heard this before? From the movie "Coffee and Cigarettes", the scene with Iggy Pop and Tom Waits...Iggy plays this song on the jukebox(well done Iggy!)

Can any of you guys tell what tuning he used?

Odds are Iggy got the name and inclination from his guitarist and forumite, James Williamson, but Iggy's a pretty well honed music lover so he may have been aware for decades.

That's a Jim Jarmusch movie--I'm pretty sure Iggy had nothing to do with the music selection.

What a bizarre scene that was. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49tTzEifY6M
Love both those guys, though.

Anyway, that particular version uses the diatonic tuning. I have another version that is played in a different tuning, but on this version the first notes he picks are 4 consecutive whole tones (Ab, Bb, C, D) and then a high G and they all sustain, so he's playing it up at the 15th fret, straight across.

Diatonic tuning: E C B A G F E high to low

Jerry's diatonic tuning has such a haunting sound. Especially in his hands!

They mis spelled the title. It's Serenade To Nalani.

Linguists well recognise Nalami as the contraction of Na (that or the) and Lami (salami). It has gone out of use since the introduction of the Hawaiian Pizza.

Mr. Mike Neer
You mentioned you have a version. Is it something you can share with us so we can hear?
I would love to learn the song. I'm wondering if there is a tab or sheet music available. At my skill level it would take me a long time to capture it by ear. I'm thinking it might sound good on the Leavitt, also. Sure would appreciate you input.
