I'm currently playing a 6-string RK lap tuned E7th (?)
Lo-hi B D E G# B E, with Multibender levers on the high B (to C# and the G# (to A)For me, it's a nice strum tuning with a hint of swing.
I'm building a six-string PSG and will have two pedals available.
So two questions:
1) Can I keep this tuning (which I really like) and if so, how best could I utilise the pedals...or do I have to change the tuning to one of the various 6-string suggestions recommended by six-string builders?
2) I can also afford one knee lever kit, but I don't want to buy it for the sake of it. Could I use it in my tuning, and if so, where?
BTW, this PSG is for home use only, I have no aspirations beyond my music room. Been there, done that with my banjer. |

sounds like the tuning you're using works for you.
as for the knee lever kit...save your money and manufacture something yourself. |

Good thinking....I guess a drop mechanism would be easy enough to make, a lever, a spring and two stops? (fools rush in etc)
But still not sure about which four strings to raise if I keep my favoured tuning? (apart from the two mentioned) plus which one to lower if I fit a lever? |

Approaching this from an E9 pedal steel mindset and keeping with the tuning that you like, I would add the low B to the 1st pedal. It is not essential to add another string to the 2nd pedal but if you like the idea of strummability, you could raise the D to C# on the 2nd pedal (unison with the raised low B---just getting that D out of the way of a strummed A chord).
The first 'obvious' lower on a lever would be to lower both E's to D#. |

Added info----lowering the E's to D# gives you a G# minor. Combined with the 2nd pedal you get an excellent B7. |

Many thanks,Jon. If you could spare the time, just to make sure I'm getting it right....
would you be good enough to type out each string with the recommended raise or lower beside it. I'm primarily a banjo picker so I confuse easily. Thanks so much! Tony[/i] |

This is how it would look. Although the (+C#) on the D string works for 6 string strumming, you lose a nice E7sus4. Up to you if you are more interested in picking or strumming.
I have NOT paid any attention to the tunings being used on the commercial six shooters such as Jerry Fessenden's. There is a lot more thought put into that than I have spent on this question and you would do well to find those discussions. |
