I've got the pedal rack disassembled for cleaning and maybe some attention to spacers.
Before reassembly, should I apply to the axle--
--light oil (household type)
--white lithium grease (both of which I have on hand) or
--something else that I should go out and get?

I'd think either grease or Triflow. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

I like to put some white Molly on the shaft when I put it back together. |

That white molly is in the same family as white lithium, right? |

Right. It's still, AFAIK, white lithium grease, with Molybdenum disulfide added. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
