I put a Telonics neo TS12 in a SF Deluxe Reverb. I like it for steel, and it is OK for guitar. Even though the Telonics speakers are pre broken in, It improved a lot after about 20 or so hours of gig time. I like it.
That Deluxe had a Tone Tubby Alnico in it, which is a great speaker. The Telonics is a different animal, tone wise, and is louder and has more headroom. I had a JBL D-131 in there for a while, but it had a funny kind of distortion on the high end, when pushed with the steel. |

| The Telonics is available in 4 or 8 ohm versions...... and yes, you would want the 8 ohm version for the Deluxe. |

Mike, can you give some more details about the Tone Tubby? Your experience with it and such? I'm curious what you liked & didn't like about it...and the model, please? Thanks

Short story is that I love TT speakers. The longer story........
I bought a pair of the original TT Red Alnico speakers way back.... at least 10 years ago. I put them in my Deluxe Reverbs. I have a 1973 SF and a 1964 BF. I really like them. I really like the DR + Tone Tubby for 6 string and low volume or recording with the pedal steel. A couple of years ago, I started experimenting with the SF to see if I could get a little more headroom and volume out of it for pedal steel. I put in the JBL, which I have had for years, and the amp was a lot louder, as could be expected with a more efficient speaker. It did have some buzzy distortion though... which is probably due to age and wear on the poor old JBL. I tried a couple of Neo speakers, and liked the Telonics best. I retubed with the new JJ 6v6s, which you can bias to get a lot more headroom... and keep decent sound. The result is that the SF is loud enough for most gigs with a decent drummer and reasonable stage volume. After about a month of gig break in time the Telonics is great with pedal steel and good with 6 string.
The Red Alnico Tone Tubby is still in the 64 BF and will probably remain there forever. Great with guitar and pedal steel.... but only low volume steel. I especially like it with the Sho~Buds. I have not tried the TT in a higher powered amp, but I am considering one for one of my 40 to 50 watt Fenders. |

Thanks, I stumbled into their website early this morning. I've a fender hot rod deluxe, I replaced the Celestion with a Bugera speaker...my amp has no mods and it opened up some tone frequencies that are better for the steel. The Bugera has a better bottom end and doesn't sacrifice the mids or highs. Still it doesn't sound as good as a JBL, but it's an improvement. Your experience shared is appreciated and duly noted.
