I'm looking for what options exist to get an electric lap steel sound from a squareneck reso. I have the JD Fishman aura piezo working fine for the more "authentic" resonator tone. Now I'd like to install a magnetic pickup that I could run to a guitar amp for a more sustaining edgier tone.

I use this one:

http://www.lacemusic.com/Dobro_Sensor.php

The tone is kind of half way between acoustic Dobro and electric lap steel, I usually try to mix it with a microphone.

Appears that the humbucker version is for round neck only? I see the lace offers both versions.

Why do you think so? They both mount on top of the guitar (with double-sided tape), so it doesn't matter whether they are on a flat- or round-neck...

Square neck string height is much higher. Didn't know if that affected the output.

Indeed, but I'd just use a shim...

Howard's link to the Lace Ultra Slim pickup has worked well for me on my National Tricone.

I have a National Slimline on my Republic Tricone square-neck.

Good luck on your search.

That looks very similar to the pickup Howard posted. (except price) I wish there was a way to know which of the two is LEAST microphonic. The goal is to dirty up the sound through an amp.

Edited to include this link which answers the question nicely.

Hey Greg,
first of all, the best result would be if you mix both signals - from Lace and Fishman piezo. I tried this (without Aura pedal, of course Smile) and it works perfect on roundneck and on my squareneck dobro. You can try different strings and pickup positions to get a better sound from Lace - the adhesive tape on its back can be easily replaced. My pickup is installed closer to the cone, because I need a 'sharper' tone and the natural harmonics.

For blending two pickups you can try the acoustic preamp from Radial, or you can try a simple blend potentiometer. (thanks Leonard Watkins for the advise Smile)

BTW, use nickel strings to get better string balance in the final signal.

Thanks Vlad, I'm going to order the Lace humbucker and start experimenting. I think I'm going to keep the signals separated via a stereo output jack/cable with a breakout at the pedal board. The piezo can go to the aura and the magnetic to normal effects pedals. Those could then be switched between and/or blended downstream without the need of any special circuitry on the guitar itself.

you are welcome, Greg Wink
I think this is a best solution - I also have the Fishman combo with two separate inputs, I will try it with my Delta Tricone ))

+1
I have good results running it thru a Fishman ParaAcousticDI, into PA or into guitar amp. Surprisingly resonator-ish (better mounted as close to cone as possible). It has a bit of a lap steel quality to it too, as Roman said. I play with full band with drums or with small combos - no feedback issues thus far.

I bought one of these used http://www.bartolini.net/product/5jnb/

I used spacers and double stick tape to mount it. Works like a charm.
