A lot of folks probably knew John McGann, who posted here quite a bit back in the day. Great steel, mandolin and guitar player in just about any style you could ask for, as well as being an incredibly inspiring, challenging and generally good natured teacher. John passed away very suddenly a few years ago, and today would have been his birthday. Been thinking about him today and just thought I'd pass that along to those of you here who knew him.

John sent me a tape to review when I was writing for Steel Guitar World. Now I used to get A LOT of tapes, and most of them were pretty terrible. So when I got John's, I expected the worst.
Suffice to say, it blew me away. John was simply amazing. A true virtuoso.
John transcribed a song called "2 AM" by guitarist Charlie Byrd for me. It was too complicated for me to figure it out, but John was able to do it. I still have the transcription, and plan to learn the tune.
His passing was a real loss. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

John was a wonderful person and a phenomenol musician. Lately I've been trying to learn a couple of George Van Eps transcriptions he gave me years ago.
I think of him often. |
