Could be a micro-phonic tube. Take a small chopstick or plastic rod and tap the tubes lightly while listening for the same noise. Also make sure the tubes are firmly seated. I had a similar noise from mine and it was a tube as mentioned above. Remember to tap lightly. |

Warren,
It sounds like tube rattle - literally one or more power tubes vibrating - which is unfortunately a common issue with this otherwise very fine amp (I've owned two). There used to be a product available called "Tom's Tube Tamer" that you attach via low-tension springs to the bottom of the power tubes to stop the rattle. Google it to see if it's still available or find photos to make your own if need be. There may be some discussion of it on the TDPRI forum. It's just springs and a hollow metal tube with heat-resistant grommets for the bottom of the EL84's to rest on. |

I had one for a short period of time that did the same thing. I was never able to track it down. Brand new amp. I contacted Peavey and they thought it might be the cabinet rattling against the chassis, but that didn't pan out. I finally took it back to the shop and they let me return it. (after their normal return period had run out, so good on them) and get a Fender. If memory serves I think that my last hypothesis was that the tube sockets were rattling against the chassis. (PC mounted sockets that come up through holes in the chassis). _________________ "Don't be mad honey, but I bought another one" |
