Hey all,
My 1955 National Console Double 8 doesn't give me a nice "boo-wa" effect with my Fender reissue tone/volume pedal. (It sounds great with my Zum D-10.)
The "wa" is great, but the "boo" just ain't there. It's as though there's no low end, just less volume.
I'm wondering if the pickups need some help or other replacement parts. I really don't know anything about electronics. I do know my buddy who loves old electronic gear replaced the capacitor and nothing seemed to change.
Any ideas? Anyone have one of these?
Picture set here of my buddy replacing the cap:

I see the cap's been replaced to the same value. This 100 nF tends to take away not only treble when the control is turned down, but also the midrange that makes a "loud" tone (the low end should be there all right)
I'd recommend using a .022 M cap.
(and don't worry about devalueing the guitar by changing this value) |

Just a side question, where are the pick-up covers, not that this has anything to do with the tone??

Rainer, we'll try that this afternoon. I'll report back.
George, I took'em off since I periodically palm mute the strings. |

I've always considered my NATIONAL D-8 as a sweet sounding
Hawaiian toned guitar...never a boo-wah. I leave that to
the FENDER Custom. I too, removed my p/u covers to obtain
the muting effect. Even if I didn't use the muting effect,
p/u covers are always useless and get in the way. My guitar is identical to yours and I have had it for some 40 years or so. |

George,
That's really interesting. I wonder if these Nationals are capable of boo-wah (or more low end)? |

Solomon...google "vintage fender guitar pickup spec info" (I know it`s not a fender)...you could possibly have a pickup problem. A.J. |

I think (not sure) that the national console bypasses any tone circuitry when the 3 way switch is on its brightest/brilliant setting.
The number of string winds on pickups was notoriously inconsistent back in the day (some good, some not so good) so you might consider having the pickup rewound. |
