I have a Boss RV5 reverb pedal that has an odd problem that may be hard for me to describe. It had been working ok, but seems to have developed a problem that sounds sorta like a slight clipping, or garbled sound just at the attack, when I would hit a string. It was only at the attack, and then it sounds ok. I am leery of sending to someone for a repair, as I don't wanna spend more on a repair than it is worth. If it's gonna be more that $50-$60 to repair it, I'd rather put that towards another pedal, or not spend it at all. I have replaced the pedal with another pedal, and wouldn't mind repairing this one and keeping it as a spare. Could this be something minor? or does someone have a feel for what might be wrong with it?

Thanks,
-Chuck

The first thing I would try even though it sounds too easy is change the cords and when you do,spray contact cleaner into the RV-5 jacks and push the 1/4" jacks in & out a dozen times. Try the pedal by itself with no other pedals in line. If you see no difference, change the power supply to a 1 spot or other high quality power supply. Power supplies degrade with age and digital effects require more power than distortion effects.

The above will be the least expensive and reasonable approach. Also, spray contact leaner on the output jack of your guitar and input of your amp and push the jack in & out. Can't hurt and hope this helps.

Lenny, thanks for those ideas. Unfortunately, I tried all those. I first thought the problem was with my volume pedal, so I removed the pedal from the chain and the problem remained. Then I removed the reverb pedal from the chain and the problem went away. So, then I thought maybe the cables might be the cause. I use George L's, so I snipped the ends on all the connections, and shot a little Deoxit into the connector before making the connection. I also cleaned all the 1/4" jacks/connectors and lubed them with some Deoxit. I had been using a Danelectro 9VDC power supply, so I switched to using a OneSpot 9VDC power supply. In the end, it all seemed to boil down to the reverb pedal itself. So, I picked up a TC Electronics "Hall of Fame" reverb pedal and the problem was gone. But like I said, I'd like to get this one working for a spare. I just don't wanna spend a bunch to get there, and I hate to discard it if it could be repaired for a nominal amount.

In 10 years I have had 3 RV-5's develop either loss of reverb sustain or garbled sounds. After the last one bit the dust I bought the Hall Of Fame reverb pedal and it is about the same sound for Hall (Church) reverb with perhaps a little less grainy sound.

Greg:

I have several RV-5 pedals but have not experienced any difficulties (yet)

I do favor the HOF pedal with the plate setting and have been trying some of the tone prints from the TC website. It's a fun pedal.

While we're talking about this stuff, I also picked up a used Electro-Harmonics Holy Grail Nano, which I actually like better than the TCE Hall of Fame. Very simple 1 toggle switch and 1 knob, and sounds great. The HOF pedal also sounds good, but a little more involved in dialing it in.
