Not really sure, but a great horned owl makes a sound about like that out here in Washington. During the daytime they do the normal hoo-uh-opoh.

Jim, I didn't hear the sound you posted I'm on my cell phone but night hawks (goat suckers) are usually out at dusk. Big insect eaters. They are related to Whippoorwills. I'll check it when n i get home.

Jim,
After now listening to the clip, I'm not sure. Nighthawks are usually only active around dusk and nest on flat roofs, the sound of that clip doesn't sound like an owl to me, more like an egret but they are usually active during the day and are by water most of the time. Wonder if there is a Shazam for bird calls

No flat roof, Craig. This one was up in a tree. I think it sounds a fair bit like the Squawk sound of the Great Horned Owl that Paul provided a link to. My wife isn't so convinced, though.
A Shazam for bird calls or other sounds would be great.
Certainly no egrets around here (or as Frank Sinatra would say: "Egrets, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention...")

Jim, You may want to send that clip to the Raptor Trust http://theraptortrust.org/ , they are up in the Great Swamp by Morristown, NJ. They rescue mostly owls and birds of prey but will take any kind of injured birds. They are non profit and have a nice small zoo of birds that can't return to the wild.
I think someone there can identify the species.
