Anyone familiar with the Lamar steel now on ebay?. Selling price is $3800.00. How does it compare with the mainline brands? |

I have one and it's a fine guitar. Made very well and has a tone that I love.
Is it keyless or with pegs? |

Best I can remember since yesterday, it has keys. The price is much higher than the mainline steel prices I see advertised. I wonder if it is worth that much more than an Emmons, Zum, etc. Not that I intend to buy one but my curiosity has gotten to me. |

It looks like the one that was displayed at the PSGA show in CT in November. It was extremely well made.
I didn't get to hear hear it though. |

I recently bought a Lamar but it was an old one and I never played it at all. I just sold it to a guy on Maui yesterday.
That price seems a little steep to me. |

For a new rosewood and maple cabinet and necks, lacquer finish, no mica, polished pedals and levers, this price is probably much less than the comparable major label guitars....add to that the handcrafted rosewood fretboards w/MOP inlaid fret markers....not mass produced decal fretboards...and I'd guess that anybody else's guitar would be approaching the 5 grand mark.

Walter,
I have a U-12 made by Lamar Colvin...I first saw the Lamar steel at Norwalk at the 30th convention gig....I LOVE my Lamar ....They are so sweet sounding ...Easy to play, and very light weight ... That D-10 on Ebay is a honey of a steel...It is the one that was at the show...Extremely nice tone , and again very light in weight....Lamar also happens to be a very nice guy , and will build you just about any kind of steel you want ...The fit and finish on his steels are absolutely incredible ..Fine cabinetry and excellent mechanics...The tone is all Lamar ...It really doesn't sound like any particular pedal steel....It sounds like a Lamar !!... Go to the Lamr site under the builders section ....The natural colored U-12 that is on the site is mine...I wouldn't sell it for anything !!...It's a keeper !!.Jim |
