Hello,

I have the stereo Evans rack mount preamp with the big "line lump" power supply, I believe it is called the HVRP. I am wanting to use it to record and I wondered how any of you guys have gotten the best results. I'm also using a Boss VF1 half rack piece in the effects loop for reverb for sure and delay... maybe.

Although I certainly can get good tone mic'ing an amp, I would like to use it because it's really convenient to use late at night in my basement studio when others are sleeping and I figure it's supposed to be a quality piece of gear made for this purpose.

I tried the balanced outs with 1/4" TRS to XLR male cables into my mic preamps, figuring it would sound best that way (I mean, it should - right?). The output volume knobs didn't seem to work and it was kind of noisy. I took the Boss piece out of the effects loop to see if that resolved the high noise floor. Not so much. So, I plugged the Boss piece back in because I really want to use it for reverb and possibly delay.

Next, I tried the regular 1/4 unbalanced outs and I regained use of the output controls on the preamp and was able to more appropriately gain stage the preamp and the effects unit and get a lower noise floor, though still not amazing. Note: I have NO ground loops - I know enough to plug everything into the same power strip.

I guess it just sounded "okay". I was unable to achieve nice sustain like you get from an amp and it seemed to sound all right, but a bit more anemic than I'd hoped. Does anyone have some "magic" eq settings or other tips on using this Evans HVRP?

If I have to, I'll just mic up my amp and get the job done that way, but using this preamp would certainly allot me more "quality" recording time, which is something I'm really hoping to achieve.

Thanks!!!!!

I had an Evans single channel low voltage preamp. I lived in an apartment and thought it would be great for "silent"recording. I also got some noise. It didn' have balanced outputs. On my DAW, I had to use a noise gate (internal) on that channel to cut the noise. It didn't yield a very good, and easily controlled sound. I ended up just sticking my amp in a closet and micing from there. Threw towels and comforters over the amp and mic so I could get some decent sound. And even after all that, I ended up just plugging in direct to the recorder. Worked out pretty good.

Thanks, Richard!

Does anyone know if it is normal for the volume controls to not work when using the balanced outs?
