Topic: help on Milwakee solo buy Hal Rugg |

Hi, I try to learn the Hal Rugg's break on Milwaukee and I have some trouble on the first lick.
It sound like he lower the 3rd a semi tone with a pedal or lever, Im I right?

Do you mean in the first couple notes of the ride, or that 7th tone at 1:59?
I'm 400 miles from my guitar (yeah, Mr. Gray should probably keep his trap shut, but he's not good at that), but it sounds like he's just rocking the B pedal a bit in the first coupla notes, and that 7th tone is letting off the A pedal and coming up a fret.

The note he repeat at 1:59 is a minor 3rd he got by playing the 7 sting 1 fret higher than he go back to the 2nd and then the tonic on the 8. He seems to play around the minor 3rd, major 3rd and the second |

Are you sure that 1 is no pedals? I'm hearing him starting with A and B pedals down, so the minor third to the IV chord would be 5th string. But I am 400 miles from my guitar.

Did you hear him drop that third, about 4 notes in?
That's your clue: AB pedal position.He let off the A pedal.
The rest of the ride should falll into place now.

I like the little "whoops" he does missing a chord @ the 2:12.  (Even George noticed that one!) There's no 3rd flattening here, or anything exotic. All I'm hearing is bread-and-butter A,B,& C pedal stuff. Unless my ears are failing me, there's not even a knee lever being used in that ride.  |

haha yes, George seems to find this funny!
I figured out almost the entire solo and like you say there simple stuff, that 6 string 7th tone is a new lick for me, very cool even if simple. |

Tony, if you watch the video, the bar goes up a fret to get the note a half step down from the A-pedalled note.
So he's on 14, key of B, when they go to the IV, he plays a D note at the 15th fret. Only he knew why: I usually get that 7 of IV by leaving the A pedal and coming down a fret.

I guess he chose this way for the phrasing, after repeating the D note a couple times he slide back from the 7 of the IV (D) to the second of the I (C#) back to the roots position instead of sliding up to the third (with A pedal down). |

i saw the oops...no big deal....and since george isn't on camera at that point, there can be no reaction. and i noticed none when he started back singing, either. you guys are eating too many jelly beans.
love hal's playing...and others like weldon, john and jaydee in this style.
also love tammy's voice and the way her notes start from a choked sound...how does she do that? |
